In was late December only a few days before Christmas, the winter solstice. Winter holiday had started only the day before and the castle was quite. The glowing full moon cast blue shadows across the snow dunes that the Hogwarts grounds had turned into as Harry Potter stared out the window in Gryffindor tower.
He wasn't alone in the school, Ron, Hermione, Neville, Ginny, and Luna, his best friends, had stayed. The group had become close during his sixth year and had remained that way throughout the seventh. Ron, Hermione, Neville, and himself had started their seventh and final year at the school of Witchcraft and Wizardry and Hermione had managed to convince the boys to stay behind to revise for N.E.W.Ts at the end of the year. Ginny and Luna had stayed to help.
Neville, who was asleep in his bed next to the window, let out a great snort as he rolled over, causing Harry to be pulled from his thoughts. About to go to bed he got up, but stopped when he heard the alarm. It was a blaring screech that sounded like nails on a chalkboard and it roused the two sleeping men from their beds.
Both pureblood wizards fell to the floor and shouted, "WHA?"
"The wards," Harry gasped. "You guys, we need to gather the students and get to the Great Hall."
All seventh year students had been intrusted with a plan if the wards ever went off. They were to gather the younger years and take them to the Great Hall. There the staff would decide which constigency plan was best.
Looking out the window, one last time before pulling on his robes and shrinking his trunk, Harry saw Muggle tanks rolling up the hill toward the main gate.
The Gryffindor common room was full of rucus as one first year girl cried out, "I WANT MY MOMMY!" and several third year boys laughed at their prank. Sighing Harry glanced at Hermione who nodded.
Harry pulled out his wand and shouted, "SLIENCEO!" with Hermione, quieting the group of students.
"Please follow me, everyone," Hermione said, "and stay quiet. Everything will be fine. Ron, Neville, Ginny, take the rear, Harry with me in the front."
The group exited the common room and headed towards the Great Hall. Hermione kept glancing at Harry and Harry asked, "Did you see it, too?" She nodded, knowing what he was talking about. "I thought there were wards?"
"There are, I don't know how," it was rear for Hermione Granger not to know something, and this was one of those cases as they entered the Great Hall.
Professor McGonagall shouted to the students, "Everyone, Muggles with eapons have come onto the grounds, you must not be alarmed and follow Harry's plan to safety."
Harry's eyes went wide along with every other seventh year. They hadn't been told this plan and Harry had only briefly mentioned it to the order. Nodding to McGonagall, Harry became serious, "Everyone follow me. Malfoy, Abott, and Granger leading. Boot, Weasley, and Longbottom, rear. Sixth years, left flank, fifth years, right flank. Follow me." He waited for everyone to get into postion, which took moments and led them from the Great Hall through a side enterance.
"Harry, what's your plan," Hermione asked.
He ignored the question and asked, "Malfoy, Boot, Abbot, Weasley, do you have your brooms?"
Ron shouted an affirmative back and the other three accioed their entire trunks to them. Hannah Aboot had become the new Hufflepuff Keeper that year and Terry Boot had become a Ravenclaw chaser. "Anyone who owns their own broom, accio it or their trunks to them," he shouted. He heard several accios and several trunks became shrunken by sixth years and above.
They reached the second floor and Harry led them down to a girl's bath room.
"Oh dear," Hermione said.
"Yes," Harry said, entering. There may have been only thirty students, but the bathroom quickly filled up. "Seventh years, guard the door, anyone entering that's not a teacher gets incapacitated on sight."
Harry wasn't usually like this, but knew if his plan was being used than it was serious. "~Open~" he said with his eyes closed. The sinks spread apart and he said, in english, "Hermione, down first use a cusioning charm, first years follow her." Everyone began to go down the tunnel just as the school shook from a hit.
"They're firing at the school," a muggle born fifth year exclaimed.
"What's going on?" Malfoy asked.
"Muggles with tanks have somehow managed to get around the anti-Muggle wards and are now attacking the school," Harry said as another shudder knocked a fifth year face first into the tunnel. "FACE FIRST!" he shouted.
Soon it was only the Seventh years. Neville went first, followed by Hannah, who was followed by Terry. Ron had just disappeared when the bathroom door burst open. Draco and Harry were staring at a machine gun.
