Chapter Two: In which the Goddess and the Swineherd finally meet (A/N: Pretty long title, huh?)
Kythrin gasped. These creatures were immense! Sun glinted off freshly minted steel, and they smelled of new metal. Her first reaction was to turn and run…but she had to talk to them- they needed to be prepared to work with Kalmilia, or whatever that mortal girl’s name was. She approached them fearfully and began to talk to them. To her surprise, the stormwings leaned forward, actually listening…

Julia’s first reaction was to grab for her bow. Tens of Thousands of Shiny Steel creatures with human heads flocked across the sky, all going in the same direction- towards them. These creatures were led by a young woman of supernatural beauty who was riding in a rope sling carried by the biggest creature.
Their claws were lethal, their teeth were deadly, and their feathers looked like they could sever chains. Sunlight glinted off their newly minted steel bodies, and they all wore a pendant hanging around their neck of obsidian.
The creatures flew directly over the army’s heads, and were gone like they had never been there before.
Later it was said that they were an illusion.

Kalmia was out weeding the garden in the growing dusk when a clanking made her look up. There, by the rhododendrons, was a creature as terrible as it was beautiful. It had a human head, steel teeth, and lethal looking claws. The feathers were daggers, and the amulet around its neck looked dangerous. But there was something in the creatures demeanor that told her they would be the best of friends.
Kalmia shifted her gaze to the creature’s passenger. She was a woman -nay- maiden of exquisite beauty. She had a sense of safeness about her, and she was cloaked with many lightweight veils. She spoke. “I am Kythrin, goddess of protection, and this is the stormwing Rachuk. Why are you still here? It would seem that you are old enough at seventeen to break away from your step-evils” Her voice was breathy and light, like the wind on a cool day.
“But I—”
“It would seem that you would know your destiny by now… your father never told you what the seer said at your birth?” the goddess questioned
“What?” Kalmia said, completely baffled
“Ah. It would seem that he did not tell you… perhaps…” the goddess paused and pulled her thoughts together then continued on a different train of thought “you need to go to bed and get some rest. Tomorrow you leave this place to move on to a different, and hopefully better one. Go pack, and meet me by the forest tomorrow morning at dawn”
“But what? How are we going to leave? And I still haven’t finished weeding the garden…” Kalmia motioned to the ground behind her that looked a lot more like an overgrown field than a garden. “Do not fear” said the Lady Protectress “All will be well”
At that moment, the weeds all vanished leaving some pretty pink petunias.
“How did you-” Kalmia asked, before the goddesses sleep spell took hold of her and an invisible force took her to her bed by the ashes.
Kythrin stood outside in the garden for quite some time, watching the sleeping house. “Sleep well, Lady Kalmia, Peacemaker of Many…much depends on you…” the goddess vanished, leaving only a scent of perfume, and a slight wind to tell anyone that she had ever been there.
