Of Kisses and Peahens
Daine and Numair sat by a stream with their legs dangling in the water. Numair was going over Daine’s book of animals with her but didn’t seem to be concentrating very well.
“But I thought peacocks laid eggs! They’re birds after all!” Daine said, exasperated.
Numair looked at her. She was so… expressive and alive when she talked… it was one of her best features.
No, scratch that. Numair thought dimly. Her face, her eyes, her hair, her personality, her… well, everything about her is perfect.
He discovered that he was staring into her eyes. Oops! I did it again, he thought. But she really is so amazing. So kind, brave, loyal, beautiful, spunky, and full of a rare zest for living. He began to stare at her again, thinking of her. Lost in though of the day she would be his. Like it would ever happen, the more realistic part of his mind that sounded too much like his mother said.
“Uh…Numair?” Daine asked “Is something wrong?”
Her voice was so beautiful… full of light and wind and fresh air. She wasn’t like some of the frivolous ladies he had courted— she didn’t even begin to compare.
How desperately Numair wanted to court this girl. But she was his student! And she was off in her own little world with Perin; at least she was until she had caught him kissing someone else.
He had been so jealous when he had first seen Perin kissing Daine. It was then that he had realized that he loved her- Daine, and that she was the love of his life.
Why hadn’t he realized earlier how great she was? Why had he taken so long to actually notice her in a way as more than friends? Now it was too late. She was heart broken by Perin and had sworn off men. At least, that was what that was what he thought she had done… it was his own conclusion after weeks of watching her talk to no men but the king, Neal, Baron George, and himself of course.
Daine began to look at him worriedly “What’s wrong, Numair?” she asked
He shook himself, and realized that he was sating into space, no- dash that, at her, again. He seemed to be doing that a lot lately.
“Now, I’m fine magelet” Numair said looking at her… trying not to look in inappropriate places…
“Alright” Daine agreed
“Back to the lesson…” prompted Numair
“You never answered my question” Daine said, trying herself not to look at him in inappropriate places.
He noticed.
“About?” Numair prompted playfully, scooting close so they were sitting crushed up against each other.
Daine’s breath hitched. So did Numair’s. He put an arm around her shoulder and moved her so she was in his lap. She looked at him and said “Whether peacocks lay eggs…” she trailed off, her voice breathy from being in such close contact with him. Passion bounced in between their eyes and they drew closer and closer to each other…
Their lips were a centimeter apart…
“They are birds after all” Daine finished breathlessly seconds before their lips met in the most sweet kiss Daine [or Numair] had ever experienced.
They bumped noses. “The peahens lay the eggs, silly” Daine laughed and Numair leaned in and kissed her passionately again.
