Mrs Finch’s Death.
Stacy Finch sighed. Glass was shattered all over the floor. She reached down and picked up the little boy that had been running around the house and into stuff.
“Jem sharp!” she said as the four year old reached towards a bigger piece stuck on his pants. She plucked it off of his pants and dropped it onto the wooden floor. “Don’t touch it! It will hurt you.” She continued.
Stacy settled the boy on her hip and walked towards the nursery to get him away from the glass that seemed to enchant him. As she walked past the kitchen she leaned against the doorframe and spoke to the black woman working at the sink. “Calpernia would you please go into the lounge and clean up the glass. Jem managed to knock over the vase from my mother and there is not glass all over the floor.”
Even though Calpernia worked for the Finches Stacy Finch never spoke down to her. Stacy believed that every human being was worth something and deserved respect.
Stacy, with Jem on her hip, went into the nursery and walked over to the cot against the wall. “Hello sweetie.” She crooned to the other toddler that had just woken up from her afternoon sleep. “How are you feeling my darling Jean?”
Jean Louise replied in a mixture of baby talk and half recognisable words. She was quite advanced for a two year old as she held her arms up to her mother. Stacy placed Jem on the soft carpeting and told him to get a few toys. The boy ran around the room putting his favourite toys in a box as Stacy lifted Jean out of her cot and hugged her.
“How would you two like to go outside?” she asked her darling children. Jem replied by jumping up and down and Jean just gurgled a happily. Stacy grabbed the outside blanket and a hat for Jean. She opened the door to the back garden and went outside.
When they where outside Stacy placed the now wriggling Jean on the grass near to where Jem was playing. She sat down on the blanket and watched happily as she saw Jem hand Jean a toy truck to play with. Her children where getting along wonderfully.
As the sun was setting jean crawled into Stacy’s lap and yawned. Stacy stood up and held jean with one arm against her. “Jem get your toys please.” She said and watched as Jem collected all his little toy cars and trucks. She took the children inside and with Calpernia’s help got them both ready for bed.
Stacy looked over at the mantelpiece and noticed that it was half past five. “If I hurry I will be able to walk most of the way home with Atticus” she thought happily to herself. On her way to the door she stopped by the kitchen and told Calpernia that she was going out to meet Atticus and that she’d be home with him. Calpernia said that she’d keep an ear on the children while Stacy was out.
Stacy grabbed her shawl and walked down the road towards town. As she passed Maudie Atkinson’s place she heard a voice calling out to her.
“Evening Mrs Stacy. How are you this fine day?” Miss Maudie called out.
“I’m very well thank you miss Maudie.” Stacy replied. “And how are you?”
“I’m wonderful. How are you’re children may I ask?” Miss Maudie enquired.
“Splendid thankyou. I must say your flowers are looking as beautiful as ever Miss Maudie. I sincerely hope that you win first prize at the fair in two weeks time.” Stacy exclaimed.
“Thank you very much Mrs Stacy. I hope so too.” Miss Maudie replied her cheeks tinged with pink.
“Have you heard? There is a new coloured man that is doing odd jobs around.” Stacy said “his name is Tom Robinson and apparently he is a hard and honest worker. He’s supporting a wife and a new baby girl.”
“I’ll remember that for autumn when I need all my wood chopped.” Miss Maudie said. “Why look here it’s your wonderful husband, Hello Atticus!”
“Why hello Miss Maudie.” Atticus said tipping his hat to the lady.
“It was lovely talking to you Miss Maudie.” Stacy said turning to Atticus. Atticus offered Stacy his arm and they walked towards home.
“How was your day dear?” Stacy asked Atticus.
“Yule trouble again.” Atticus sighed. “Mr Yule was arrested yesterday. He attacked his wife in a fit of rage again and this time I was assigned to prosecute him. The poor woman was blue all over. I feel so sorry for poor little Mayella. She’s the only girl amongst all of her brothers. Some day poor Mrs Yule won’t be there any more and then that girl will be in charge. If she was sent to school she would be able to make something of herself but Mr Yule wont let her anywhere near the school.”
Stacy watched as Atticus collected the mail and was about to walk up the stairs when she felt a sudden pain in her chest. “Atticus…….” She gasped.
Atticus ran to her but was too slow to catch her when her body hit the ground. “Stacy!” he cried. “Stacy wake up! Please talk to me!”
But Stacy wasn’t answering him. She was dead.
