It was eleven-twenty-five. Each second, the clock ticked a little closer to the next minute, closer to the end of the class. It was practically the only sound in the room. If I listened hard enough, I could hear people in the back snoring softly as they slept through the class. Every few minutes, someone would cough or sneeze, or their stomach would growl in anticipation for lunch. A small handful of people were writing or drawing something to pass the time. A smaller amount of those writing were doing homework for other classes. Carrying into the room through the door was the vague sound of other teenagers in the hallway, let out of their class early for lunch or exchanging books for their next class. Their voices were jovial and carefree as they discussed whatever was on their mind, be it the latest gossip or a homework assignment that had been due the previous day. It was really unfair that they had been let out early and we were still in the classroom with nothing to do.
The teacher of the biology class, Mr. Vexen, positively loved pop quizzes. We could count on about two every week, but we never knew what they would be about or when they'd be given. Vexen said that it was to keep us on our toes, studying constantly so we wouldn't fail the quizzes. The students said that it was just to torture them. The principal, Mr. Ansem, didn't seem to have an objections with the practice, though he had suggested that Vexen should make it one pop quiz every week, or every other week. Of course, the teacher hadn't listened, so we, the students, still received two pop quizzes every week about whatever Vexen felt we needed to know—which was everything.
As another two minutes passed by, a new group of students appeared in the hall, let out from another class three minutes early. Even more unfair than the other class. With bleary eyes, I watched as Riku, my best friend, appeared at the window near the door, waving a little before walking on to his locker. Whether he'd been waving to me exactly, to his girlfriend Kairi, or both of us, I wasn't sure. It didn't quite bother me who exactly, either; we were all friends. So I gave a little wave in return before starting to sit up in my desk. As I did, I saw the other person Riku could have been waving to only two desks in front of me and one to the side.
Her long brown was left down today, brushing her shoulders. She must have felt me looking at her because she tucked her hair behind her ear as she turned to smile at me. Just as I started to feel the normal pang her smile gave me, my stomach growled loudly, loudly enough for the entire classroom to hear if the small laughs were anything to tell. Kairi giggled quietly at me, covering her mouth with one hand. I was about to return the smile, sheepishly, when I felt something hit the side of my face, leaving a stinging sensation.
When my hand flew up to the side of my face, my fingertips felt a small, damp spot on my cheek as a paper spitball fell from that spot into my lap. Across the room, I could hear the familiar cackles of my two least favorite people. With a small scowl from the corners of my eyes, I could see Axel and Roxas laughing very quietly and pointing in my direction. It took a lot to ignore them since they seemed to have issues with not only be, but Riku too. It was fine when they bothered me; I eventually managed to ignore them. But when they messed with my friends, that was even harder to ignore.
When Mr. Vexen cleared his throat loudly, that silenced everyone and everything in the room, even stomachs. With the rumors surrounding Vexen and a few of the other teachers, no one really wanted to make them mad. Except maybe Axel; he seemed to have something against Vexen. It was none of my business, though. So I placed my head on the desk again, waiting for the last minute and some seconds of the class to end.
What seemed like an eternity later gave way to the bell and noise immediately erupted. Voices rose, chairs scraped, books were slapped onto the desks, and Mr. Vexen's voice still carried above it all telling us he would return our quizzes to us soon and that we all should have copied the homework from the board; it was due the following day, Friday. Not having seen the homework, I stayed in my seat and began to write it down quickly, hoping I'd be able to read it later.
As I was finishing the last few letters in a messy scrawl, a brown paper bag slapped onto my desk loudly, startling me. It was Riku. He gave me a smirk before walking over to Kairi. I quickly looked away, trying to keep myself from being a bad best friend to Riku. Once I finished writing the assignment, I put the notebook into my backpack and then peeked inside the paper bag. There were two foil wrapped shapes, one more rectangular than the other, and then a box drink. There was also a small amount of change in the bottom corner. The very thought of what could be in the foil had my stomach growling again; breakfast was long gone.
When I started to reach into the bag to pull out the smallest, more rectangular shaped foil, Riku spoke over the noise in the classroom. “That's cake, Sora; wait until we're outside to eat that,” he told me, grinning still. I had a feeling that expression wasn't really meant for me. It was for who he was standing next to with one hand a little lower than her waist. Riku gave me a friendly wink before turning his attentions back to Kairi. He bent his head to whisper something in her ear, making her turn a slight shade of red and giggle again. I tried to look away, but my eyes were practically glued to my best friend and his girlfriend. Just as they were about to kiss, Mr. Vexen spoke up loudly again. “Mr. Dawn,” he began in a bored tone, addressing Riku, “if you'd please save your PDA with Miss Giardino for another time, I'm sure the classroom would appreciate it. I know I would.”
Riku was pretty amazing. He managed to withstand the reprimanding tone from Mr. Vexen and still steal a rather sloppy kiss from Kairi in the space of a few seconds. My heart gave a small flutter that I refused to acknowledge as I stood up. Riku was still looking at me with a crooked smile. Anyone who didn't know him might have thought he was grinning because he'd been showing off. Anyone who did know him knew he was a showoff, period, and his grin was trademark.
“Ready for lunch, Sora?” he asked as Kairi grabbed his hand. Riku's smile might have flickered from his eyes for a moment or two, but I wasn't sure so shrugged it off. It was probably just the lighting in the room. So with a nod, I swung my backpack over my shoulder, grabbed the lunch bag, and started to walk over to Riku and Kairi. It was time for lunch, finally.
My name is Sora Hikari. I'm sixteen years old, and I attend the High School That Never Was on Destiny Islands as a junior. My best friend, Riku Dawn, is seventeen, and is a senior. His girlfriend, Kairi Giardino, is also sixteen. Riku and I have been going to the same school practically since preschool. Around fourth grade, Kairi moved to the Islands and quickly made friends with us. Since then, we've all been inseparable. Going to the same school for years has led to some pretty interesting jokes about the elementary, middle, and high school names. Riku often said, “If they never were then why did we have to go?” Up until this year, we all had most of the same classes, causing plenty of trouble for the teachers. This year, since Riku is finally a senior, he decided to take some classes different from Kairi and me to finish high school with a “bang”, he'd said. We're still waiting for that.
We had a routine. We all still had the same lunch hour, so that was when we would catch up with each other about the day so far and make plans for the afternoon. There was a huge tree in the center courtyard of the school that the three of us sat under, every school day, eating lunch that someone's mother had made. It was a steady rotation so that Kairi's mom and my mom made lunch twice a week, and Riku's only once.
Whenever Kairi's mom sent us lunch, it was usually something healthy and homemade from their vegetable garden. Kairi would bring a decent sized container that held enough of whatever her mother had made for all three of us. It was usually pretty good, since it was homegrown. That included fruit juice, too.
When my mom made lunch for us, it was usually some type of sandwich, some homemade cookies, and some type of drink. The sandwiches had a different filling each time, repeating every few weeks.
There was a reason why Riku bought lunch once a week. He didn't like to talk about it, so neither did I, unless it was Riku himself. I highly doubted he had really told Kairi much about it. I had my suspicions, as well, that Riku's father was the one who made the lunches, or sometimes even Riku himself. It was usually a messily put together sandwich, a lump of cake, both wrapped in foil, and a box drink tossed in hurriedly. There was always some money in the bottom of the bag, too, to buy something extra should anyone need it. But we'd all become so used to everything about each other's lunches that we never had to comment on it in any way.
Riku and Kairi had been going out for close to a year now. It wasn't too clear to me on how it came about and why they choose that time, and I didn't really want to find out. Riku had never tried to tell me, and I had never asked. Kairi seemed to be shy talking about it, too. I think Riku never tried to talk about it because he knew my secret.
See, I'm in love with Kairi.
