Kairi woke the next morning with the sun in her eyes and Riku’s arms still wrapped securely around her. His hands were clasped together at the small of her back in such a casual manner, Kairi wouldn’t have been surprised if he was actually awake. But the gentle rise and fall of his chest beneath her cheek told otherwise, that he was fast asleep still. The thing about a sleeping Riku was that it was hard to tell if he really was asleep or not. He breathed a certain way when he was awake, pretending to be asleep. It was a little louder than when he was really sleeping and a little deeper than it should have been otherwise. In fact, it sounded an awful lot like Sora’s when he wasn’t snoring loudly enough to wake the dead..
Riku was a light sleeper. The only exception to that was if he was accustomed to the noises around him. When the three teenagers would sleep on the island, Riku had never woken from Sora’s snoring or the crashing of the waves, but she could remember him waking from a gentle tap on his shoulder or a soft whisper of his name if she ever needed something. It was impossible to try to wake Sora for anything. So Kairi was rather surprised when Riku stayed in his sound slumber as she pulled carefully out of his arms. He did stir in the slightest; if he hadn’t, Kairi would have been worried. She could only surmise that he was still very tired. So as he turned onto his side with one arm draped over his mid-torso and the other close to his face, Kairi just smiled at him.
Even when Riku slept, he wore a schooled expression of intense concentration. His light colored eyebrows were knitted together and his lips were pressed into a firm line. His features made Kairi wonder what he was dreaming. Instead of asking him, because she was sure he would wake and he seemed like he needed the sleep, she bent down and pressed her lips against his. Almost immediately, his visage softened considerably. He let out a quiet sigh and shifted further against the bed. Kairi smiled at him as she brushed his hair away from his face.
“Where’re you going?” he mumbled, still mostly asleep. His eyes were still tightly closed and his lips had hardly moved, but Riku had the strange and sometimes helfpul ability to speak without moving his mouth too much. It hadn’t startled her for quite a while now.
Taking a soft breath of her own, Kairi sat on the edge of her bed and placed her hand on Riku’s shoulder. “Not far,” she told him quietly, “I was just going to make a phone call.”
Riku nodded vaguely and shifted again, onto his back once more. The hand that had been draped on his side now rested on his chest. His other hand stayed next to his head. “All right. Come back when you’re done, okay?” he slurred, “I have something to tell you.”
Kairi smiled at him and nodded. “Okay. I won’t be long.” But he had already drifted off into sleep once more.
In the parlor of Kairi’s giant house was where most of the action happened. It was also where most calls were made. Though there was also a phone in the kitchen, her mother didn’t like for her to use that one. The moment the young girl stepped into the parlor, she turned on her heel and left. Not only were there guests visiting, but there was some kind of panic going on amongst everyone, including her parents. And she was still in her pajamas, which consisted of long pants and a small, comfortable shirt not fit for nice company. It was best to hope she hadn’t been seen by anyone and make her call in the kitchen, even though her mother would fuss a little about it.
The phone rang a few times before a sleepy voice answered with a hardly coherent, “Hello?”
Kairi smiled. “Hey, Selphie.” There were times when Selphie and the others, Tidus and Wakka, would sleep on the island with Kairi, Riku, and Sora. There was a specific order in which they all woke, too. Riku was usually awake to watch the sunrise. Following him was Tidus, but he usually went swimming very shortly after rubbing the sleep from his eyes. Wakka woke next, joining Tidus in the morning swim. Then it was Kairi, well after the sun had risen. Selphie stirred about an hour after Kairi, only to harass the three boys that were awake into doing something with her, or at least try. Only when the din became especially loud did Sora wake anytime sooner than an hour and a half after Selphie. It went without saying, as Kairi was calling now, it was before Selphie’s wake up time.
It only worried Kairi a little that Riku was still sleeping. But, she thought again, maybe he was just really tired.
“What’s up?” Selphie murmured. She sounded like she was stretching, so Kairi gave her a few moments.
“Not a lot.” Something crashed in the other room and drew Kairi’s attention away from the phone suddenly. Her mother started giving some quick orders, it sounded like, and soon enough the noise died down again to mumbles. If Kairi wasn’t mistaken, it had been Sora’s parents that were visiting. They were almost as bad as Sora himself when it came to making messes. At least the messes his parents made weren’t as bad as Sora’s.
“Kairi?” Selphie sounded a little urgent, like she’d been saying something when Kairi had zoned.
“Yes? Oh. Sorry,” Kairi blushed a little to herself. She always seemed to end up ignoring Selphie for some reason or another; it was almost inevitable. And always, she felt bad for it because the majority of the time, it was because of Riku and Sora stealing her attention, more so Riku of late...
“I asked if you wanted to hang out later today. We haven’t seen much of each other lately.” Kairi had the distinct feeling that Selphie was supposed to be pouting to make her feel bad about it, but Kairi was more or less immune. Hanging out with boys who were used to having their own way had helped Kairi form the art of not feeling too sorry for them.
But still, a smile touched Kairi’s face. “Sure. That’s what I was calling about, actually. Something distracted me, though, before I asked.” A laugh or two escaped from both girls.
“So,” Selphie began once their laughter died down, “where should we go?”
And so the two girls discussed quickly any plans that they could possibly make for a Sunday afternoon. Going to the shopping center on the other side of the main island was a possibility, but neither really needed to buy anything that they couldn’t find at the corner stores. Walking was more or less out of the question since there was nowhere new to go, and Selphie didn’t imagine as much as Riku and Sora; she was more romantic than adventuresome. Or course, Kairi didn’t say that out loud...
At last, they managed to agree on going to the beach to tan a little after lunch. Kairi was extremely pale for the time of year. School had just started not too long ago, and it wasn’t that cold yet. It never really was cold enough for it to snow, but the temperature did sometimes manage to drop low enough to be uncomfortable to the islanders. The summer had felt long, and it left Kairi wondering why she wasn’t tanner than she was now. It would be nice to have some color to her otherwise paper-white skin.
Kairi had just hung up with her friend and was standing up to return to her room when she ran almost bodily into someone. It startled her at first until extremely warm hands carefully clasped around her arms. She looked up to see Riku just before he pulled her against his chest into a soft embrace.
“Good morning,” he murmured softly. Even though he hadn’t spoken very loudly at all, his voice rumbled in his chest in a soothing manner. Kairi’s eyes closed as she relaxed into his arms. He was so warm... “Who were you talking to?”
A little reluctant to pull away from him, Kairi took her time to lean away from Riku. When she did, she smiled. “Selphie. We’re going to hang out later today and do girl stuff.”
As Kairi looked into Riku’s eyes, she could have sworn she saw a handful of mixed emotions flowing through the aquamarine orbs. She was about to question what she saw when Riku suddenly looked away from her. His eyes couldn’t hold any secrets, and it seemed he had one. Kairi started to worry a little and was about to ask about it when Riku shut his eyes and looked away from her.
“Girl stuff,” he repeated, lifting his arms above his head to stretch. “Sounds fun,” he added sarcastically.
Kairi laughed at him a little before clasping her hands behind her back. “Yeah. I feel sort of bad because I haven’t been hanging out with Selphie that much lately,” she said, smiling still but a little sadly this time.
Riku let his arms drop carefully before clasping them over his chest. Kairi watched him carefully. Something was wrong... It wasn’t just the fact that it was obvious he had a secret hiding in his eyes, but he was acting extremely cautious, like there was something he wanted to say, but at the same time didn’t want to say anything at all. That made Kairi a little nervous, because usually when Riku was like that, whatever he wanted to say normally wasn’t good...
When he cleared his throat, it ended the moments of contemplation she was having about what was on his mind. “How long are you two going to hang out?” he asked her, leaning back on the wall.
With a probably obvious decision to pretend she hadn’t noticed the way he was acting, Kairi began to explain that it would likely be mid-afternoon before they left the island, because they were going to meet up after lunch. As she talked, though, Kairi thought mulled over Riku. He probably didn’t realize he was acting like he was nervous about something; he usually didn’t. Whenever she or Sora would ask him about what was bothering him, Riku always seemed to be surprised they asked, like it wasn’t obvious he was troubled. But for now, Kairi wouldn’t ask. She knew that Riku also had the tendency to become angry when asked too much about his problems.
“Well, I’ll meet you on the island later in the afternoon, then. How’s that?” he asked when Kairi finished speaking.
She gave him a small nod before leaning up to kiss him on the cheek. “Sounds great. I’m going to go change clothes,” Kairi said, starting to walk over to the hallway to her room when she remembered something.... “Riku, what were you going to ask me earlier?” She stopped short of leaning in the doorway, only looking over her shoulder at him.
Her words seemed to snap him out of a sudden and short-lived reverie, if the startled jump he gave meant anything. “What? Oh. I’ll tell you later,” he said, hooking his right thumb in the pocket of his pajama pants. Kairi dragged her eyes up to his face when he added, “I’m going to go over to Sora’s for a few minutes, but I’ll come back if you want me to.”
Kairi gave him a small nod before continuing down the hallway. She turned so quickly, she missed the regretful look in Riku’s eyes as he looked at the floorboards.
He was definitely troubled.
