Okay so while watching Dr. Who with my mom, sis, and dad, (the season three premiere on Sci Fi) I had a laugh because the Doctor was invited to someone's Christmas dinner then said, "I'll be a moment," then climbed in the T.A.R.D.I.S. and started to beam away...my laugh was because I said, "Oh, he's quite the slither-outer, isn't he?" and then thought of Howl...and that got me to thinking...
Why do you think he gave up his heart? I really would like some feedback on this because it is a perplexing question. I don't remember if it's in the book (I'm rereading it, so if it is I'll come across it soon enough), and I know it's not in the movie, other than, "I'm such a cowardly wizard...".
Thoughts? Anyone?

Well when he was a young boy, Howl actually was a nicer person. And Calsifer fell from the sky, frightened and lonely and needed a heart to survive. My bet was it was 'instinct' that a young boy would give up his heart for a poor dying creature.
I am very optimistic when it comes to Howl though.

Well, in the movie he was a young boy. In the book he was *checks*....eh, I think he was 20. I can't find the exact age right now...but anyway. And with fire demons, Calcifer, when they fell from the sky, it was because they were dying. Well I suppose that Calcifer and Howl go well together as they're both cowards because Calcifer didn't want to die. So when Howl, for reasons that I'm slowly finding, offered Calcifer his heart in a deal, Calcifer saw that as a great bargain and took it (and was thusly exploited for a number of years).
I read in the section where Sophie goes to meet with Mrs. Penstemmon that when a wizard makes a deal with a fire demon then the lifespan of the wizard and the demon is expanded, and the power of the wizard is increased according to the demon so that's great incentive for a wizard to trade something, ne?
I'm discussing with a friend that maybe he was afraid of having his heart broken so decided to hide it in Calcifer...
It's quite an interesting subject, definitely, and I really do need to finish rereading the book to see if anything about it is mentioned...
