Author's Note: This is a senerio in which the events in the movie The Day After Tomorrow toook place, plunging the world into an ice age. I took that idea and ran with it to create a story set a few thousand years into the ice age. This story will deal with how the people of this future view us.
Summary: A historian comes across some books not realizing the chain of events the books will start.

It was difficult to tell whether the figure dressed in black was a man or a woman. Their face and head was completely covered in the black hood of their long black coat, black pants and high black boots barely visible under the folds. Black gloves hid slim fingers of the mysterious person who was a single black speck in a sea of white. A cloud of white snow billowed up and around the hooded figure as hidden eyes scanned their surroundings, looking, hunting for some familiar landmark in the white wilderness.
Finally the figure must have been satisfied at finding whatever they were looking for as they changed their direction slightly and continued walking across the frozen wastes. The figure continued approaching a building that seemed to rise up out of the snow and ice that was cracking under the person's feet. The tote bag over the person's shoulder swayed as the person marched over the snow dune and towards an ancient building. At one time the building had been a new and high tech hotel skyscraper, as far the person could tell, with high-speed wireless internet, a "green" design (including roof-top solar panels that were still functional today), and luxurious rooms that looked more like apartments than hotel rooms.
Before the Great Freeze, it had been one of the pinnacles of modern technology, now it was an ancient run down relic of a time that many wish would return for its conveniences, like hot water or vehicles. The figure finally reached the building and walked around to the side out of the wind to where a ladder was attached to the building. They wanted a time when one didn't have to climb to the roof to enter a building.
They had tried building tunnels under the snow and ice that lay a hundred plus feet thick in most places, but they had given up when they reached the Deep Ice, as it was called. At one time a magnificent and incredible city had been built along the coastline of the ocean, but shortly before the Great Freeze, the ocean had risen up to sink the great city into it's cold waters. The water had not receded before the Great Freeze, so there were several feet of solid ice that at one time had been a great ocean below the ice and snow that had layered itself on top of it since. When they had reached the Deep Ice they had given up, it was one thing to tunnel through snow, it was another to try to tunnel through the glacial tomb of the ancients.
The slim figure reached the roof of the building and stole between solar panels and workers, keeping the snow from getting too thick around the panels, into the door of the building. No one wanted to live at the top of the buildings or too close to the Deep Ice, so most of the residence lived between the fifth and the fifteenth floor, the Deep Ice started in what used to be the third floor of the building.
The figure took off their hood as they moved lower into the building. She revealed herself to be an exotic looking woman, well at least everyone thought she looked exotic. Most people, especially those born and raised South of the glaciers like she was, had dark skin, dark eyes, and dark hair. She, on the other hand, had bright red hair, which was exotic enough, and pale skin, as pale, if not more so, than the glacial-born. But the most exotic thing about her, were her eyes, mismatched pools of blue and green, they drew you in and kept you in their grasp. She could have been a model or the trophy wife of one of the rich food tycoons, but she was neither. She was a historian and a linguist, specializing in the ancients, the people before the Great Freeze. She smiled as one of the kids in the hall waved at her. Even for the glacial-born, like these kids, she was exotic, as even the glacial-born usually had dark hair and eyes. She finally reached her apartment on the fourth floor; she had chosen to live near the Deep Ice for her work.
When she had first moved in, the bachelors had thought she had been unable to take care of herself, she didn't have the money for one of the higher apartments. She not only demonstrated that she could take care of herself, nearly breaking the hand of a man who had gotten to touchy-feely for her taste, but that she was a working woman who chose to live down near the Deep Ice, not because of financial hardship.
She opened the door and toed her way in. She lit a candle and sat her bag down, rubbing her sore shoulders and secretly wishing that she hadn't needed to climb that ladder. She left her coat on, it was too cool in the apartment not to, but she took off her boots and slipped into a pair of fuzzy house slippers, before picking up her bag and the candle and moving farther into the apartment.
She believed in saving power and so used the candles for lighting unless she was working. She walked into her office and sat the bag down before going to the kitchen to get some food. She was really excited to begin work on her latest discovery. She had found what the ancients had called a library, full of books that with effort she could translate in to the Common language.
The books were written mostly in the ancient language of English, but a few were written in Spanish, as well. She had put as many as she could carry in her bag before she had left, making sure to mark the location on her map so that she could get back to it. She heated some water and made tea as she was going through her cabinets trying to find something to eat. Finally deciding to boil some rice she quickly made her dinner and went back to her study.
Setting the steaming plates of food down on her desk she turned to the bag seeing it as a treasure chest full of ancient wisdom and knowledge. With trembling hands she opened the latches on her bag and carefully removed the books. They were frozen stiff, but she could thaw them out and then read them. She was eager and it showed as she pulled out a couple of elevated screens with basins under them and sat the books on the screens. It was one of the special tools she and other historians used when dealing with ancient artifacts, as most of them were frozen, it allowed the item to thaw out without sitting in a pool of water.
She sat these next to the heater before turning back to her cooling dinner and eating as she read through a text on the ancient languages. The Common language was based off of English and Spanish with some Chinese thrown in for variety. It was spoken by everyone in the world, with different dialects and accents, of course. She had barely understood anyone when she had first come up North, back in her school days. It had not only been a cultural shock, it had been a linguistic one as well. Now, though, she spoke the glacial dialect, which relied more heavily on Chinese and Japanese, as well as her own native one which seemed to have been comprised of Portuguese as well.
The night went fast. She finished eating, cleaning her plate and cup, took a shower, and went to bed, hoping the books would be ready tomorrow.
