Disclaimer: I do not own anything by Stephanie Meyer. Only the plot or any characters not found in the books.
The following applies only to this chapter, and will change in the future.
Warnings: None.
Genres: General, slight angst (kind of.)
Rating: K+/PG
Pairings: Mention of Edward/Bella, Carlisle/Esme.
Notes: I know this is VERY short, but the chapters will be getting longer.
Summary: The vampires want to kill her, the werewolves want to use her, and the Government wants her back. Bella must discover why she is so special, why Edward can’t hear her thoughts, before her past can catch up to her. Can her relationship to Edward handle such a twist?
Edward stared unseeingly, his dark gold eyes blank. He was miserable, and that was plain on his face. If felt like a gaping black hole had been ripped into his chest, but Edward knew he deserved it. He had left the only thing he had ever loved in so long, since his parents nearly one hundred years ago.
Carlisle watched his adoptive son carefully, with sadness permeating every part of his body. It hurt to watch Edward go through such pain. He knew that he’d be lost if he lost Esme. He wanted to comfort Edward, but didn’t know how.
He and Edward were sitting in his office. He’d called the younger vampire there to talk, but he wasn’t quite sure how to start.
Carlisle was about to open his mouth, when a sharp ringing made him stop. It was unusually loud in the otherwise quiet room, and it was even louder to the vampires’ sensitive ears. Edward blinked, his eyes focusing slightly. He reached slowly for his phone, which rested inside his pocket. When he had pulled it out, he stared at the number, but Carlisle didn’t see recognition flash in his eyes, so obviously Edward didn’t know who it was.
Edward clicked a button, and then put it to his ear. Carlisle’s eyes narrowed, suddenly realising that no one outside the Cullen family should know the numbers to their silver mobiles. Obviously it wasn’t any of the other vampires, considering they were all inside the house, and could easily find Edward should they need him.
Edward’s eyes widened slightly in surprise, then happiness and then finally darken further in anger. “How did you get this number?” he hissed. He was about to say something else, but the person on the other end cut him off. Edward’s eyes widened again, genuine fear flashing into his face. Carlisle stood in alarm.
Edward stood too, completely focused on the other person on the phone, “No! Bella, don’t stop talking.”
It was Carlisle’s turn to widen his eyes.
He watched as Edward’s fear was replaced by a deep-seated hate. He had tensed, and a growl built in his chest. It came to the point where he simply snarled down the phone. The other vampire watched, anxious, as Edward froze, his breathing heavy.
“Let her go!” He spat. Even from where Carlisle stood behind his desk, he could hear the other person laughing manically.
He winced, imagining Edward’s reaction when he got his hands on the laughing idiot. Violently.
The phone line went dead, and Edward bared his teeth at nothing in particular. His clenched hands twitched, and Carlisle figured he was restraining himself from breaking something. Suddenly, Edward’s dark gaze caught his.
