Okay, guys, I wrote this back in (hehe) February but haven't showed it to anyone till this contest came along cause I thought it was kinda lame... unfortunately I can't think of anything to write for the contest so I'm gonna give this one a try! Y'all be honest now, and tell me what you think! Sorry it's a bit long...
Summer Romance's End
Quietly we stole away,
Into the night we did stray...
Lost in our own dream,
Wild and free!
We were both so young,
And now, thinking back, it was kinda dumb...
But we thought we were ready,
To truly be in love...
It was the summer of 1945,
The war was just ending...
And lives were just beginning...
I thought I’d found the one...
Nothing could stop us from being together....
Except the end of the summer...
I knew he was going back home...
Back to California...
But somehow my heart wouldn’t let me believe...
That this was really the end...
That, that would break us apart...
But yeah, we knew it would...
We only had a little while,
And not much else mattered at the time...
We didn’t really have rhyme or reason for it...
Just... felt like it I guess...
We slipped off our shoes and grasped each other’s hand,
Then, on the count of three, ran!
Splash!
We hit the water, clothes and all,
And it chilled us to the bone...
We shivered for a few, then all we could do,
Was to stay there looking at the stars,
Ignoring my mother’s calls from the house,
Telling us, “time to eat, you two!”
We stayed in that cool water for hours,
There was no way we were getting out...
Mother would just have to wait,
And dinner didn’t matter!
We only cared that we were together,
For the very last night of the summer...
I remember the last thing he said to me,
Before we got out of that lake...
He told me he’d always remember me,
Even if we were never again to meet...
I looked that boy in the eye,
I could tell he was trying not to cry...
I loved him, I was sure...
It was my first real boyfriend... why did it have to end?
I swam right up near him,
And pulled him close to me...
He wrapped his arms around my waist and mine around his neck,
We stared into each other’s eyes and saw the other’s soul...
Our hearts ached as we hugged each other tight...
We knew this was the last night... but it just didn’t feel right...
Life was cruel...
This was so sad... it hurt us bad...
Walked back up to my house...
Mama let him stay and eat...
But dinner ended all too quick,
And now the trick, was to get through saying goodbye...
We both let it out, didn’t care who saw us cry!
On the front porch swing... last chance we had was there...
If we still wanted to say anything...
He leaned and whispered in my ear,
“Girl, I’ll never forget you... you’ll be in my heart!”
With that he brushed his lips to mine then got up and was gone before nine...
I sat there all alone till Mama called me in...
I went to bed and cried a while,
Then fell asleep and dreamed,
That he would be there when I woke...
But I never saw him again...
It had indeed been the end,
Of a beautiful summer romance,
And...
We never met again.
