The New World
I would not have thought it was possible to feel so many emotions at once, but The New World proved me wrong. I wanted to cry and laugh and smile all at the same time. This movie was absolutely magical.
It is the story of Pocahontas, the princess daughter of the New World natives, and John Smith, the captain of the English settlers who invaded her peoples land. It follows Smith as he experiences the euphoria of simplistic life; life with the young princess as his guide. The emotions of love and duty, fear and loneliness, even prejudice.
Colin Farrel gave a shockingly touching performance as Captain Smith, never faltering in emotion, always seeming to be perfectly on his mark. He was in his element right down to his very soul. One of the things I always say makes a decent actor is when you look at the man and see the character, not the other way around. He accomplished this feat that I have only seen achieved by three men before: Johnny Depp, Paul Bettany and Viggo Mortensen.
Despite the realistic fact that Q’Orianka Kilcher was only fourteen when she filmed this, she managed to give the most believable performance by a young woman I have ever seen. It was breathtakingly melancholy and bittersweet, and I applaud her.
Christian Bale, I have never seen one of his movies before, but I am officially a fan. He brought John Rofle to life in the most complete way. He understood perfectly who his character was, and I think he gave a spectacular performance.
The scenes were breathtaking, capturing the beauty of the nature and the life the Native Americans lived. The music fit perfectly to ever frame of the film (I highly recommend the soundtrack to anyone).
The New World also starred Christopher Plummer, Wes Studi, August Schellenberg, and featured, in a small part, David Thewlis. It is rated PG-13 for some intense battle sequences. Run time is 2 hours 15 minutes.
