Prologue
He thrashed sporadically in the water gasping for air, fighting to reach the surface. For a moment his head bobbed to the surface before he fell beneath the cold water once again.
This time as James stared up at the moon through the water’s slick surface he knew that he didn’t have the energy to pull himself up again. But for some reason he didn’t feel worried. Perhaps a part of him couldn’t believe that he was going to die.
There were so many things he hadn’t done yet. His first kiss, his first senior prank, and now these dreams seemed so far away. Ironically, he started the swimming club the very next day.
Now that he thought about it; how had he fallen over the side of the bridge in the first place? He remembered walking home from school late that night. Rodney had locked him in his locker and the janitor didn’t find him until later that day.
His parents were still at work. They were always at work. As a kid he often spent a lot of his time alone in his room. But now he was used to it and as he looked over the bridge and peered at the horizon and the sunset. He noticed a girl flying on a broom.
Now that he thought about it. The way he was going to die was going to be really lame. He could imagine the headlines now: “Boy dies after seeing girl fly on broom. What a looser.”
He chuckled lightly to himself. His vision was begging to blur. It wouldn’t be too long now before he died……
A soft breeze is what caused him to wake. Where was he? Was he dead? First things first he decided. And without a further thought he opened his eyes. Much to his surprise he found that he was flying; straddled to a broom sitting behind a girl. The girl he had seen earlier while he was on the bridge.
“Kat, the human’s awake,” said the cat sitting in the rucksack strapped to the girl’s back. The cat was talking. The girl turned her head and gave him a once over. Beneath the girl’s pointed hat she the most beautiful red hair and her blue eyes seemed to stare straight through him.
“Are you ok,” she asked not taking her eyes off him. Big mistake, she hadn’t been watching where she was going and crashed into a tree. James didn’t have energy to prepare for the collision and simply crumpled into the girl’s back only to rebound and fall viciously to the ground. The girl along with her talking cat who was still snuggly stuffed in the rucksack fell on the ground next to him.
“You really have to watch your landings,” moaned the cat. James had just realized where they were. They were in a neighbor hood in someone’s front yard, his front yard. How did the girl know to get him there?
The girl was the first to get up. She helped James to his feet.
“Oh shush, Salem just be glad we got here,” she said addressing the cat. Picking up her broom the girl grabbed James's hand and together they floated up to his window. Like magic his window slid open and the girl dropped him lightly into his room and on his bed.
He didn’t know whether it was some kind of spell but for some reason every moment seemed like a dream and in no time as he laid his head on to his pillow he fell to sleep.
