What in the world had just happened? Jude stood, staring at the scene before her. There was a dead woman in her living room, and another one writhing in pain from a gunshot wound on the floor. For about ten seconds, she’d thought she would surely die – not something that happened just every day, especially to a doctor – when this…this creature had appeared virtually out of nowhere. The being had scared the wits out of Jude, what with the fangs, red eyes, and deathly pale skin seeming to glow in the darkness. However, it had saved her life.
How bloody odd.
Jude looked at the gun in her hand and sighed. The stupid thing had nearly cost her, her life. With a few quick maneuvers, Jude had unjammed the gun. The clink of a wasted bullet hitting the ground was barely heard over the crying of the injured woman. Jude walked over to her and knelt, inspecting the wound. It was in her abdomen, in the upper left quadrant over her liver. Blood was already staining the wood floors. Gently, she turned the woman to search for an exit wound; there was none.
Quietly, Jude swore. The bullet was likely lodged in the woman’s liver, causing all sorts of toxicity. She felt the woman’s pulse, which was racing, then hung her head. “I’m sorry,” she mumbled. No hope for her.
As Jude began to stand, something caught her eye.
Her other Glock was sitting in the barely ajar end table drawer. Why hadn’t she remembered that fact minutes earlier?
After a moment of speculation, Jude walked over to look out the window again. People were streaming through the streets, laughing, crying, or screaming manically. Why was it every citizen of the Valley was infect, save that woman and herself?
With a shake of her head, Jude walked to her room. Quickly, she changed clothes and grabbed her lab coat. Why, she didn’t know. Maybe there was someone in the hospital that was unaffected and they could figure out this strange happening.
After quickly reloading her gun, Jude shoved it in the waistband of her jeans. She grabbed a few magazines and shoved them into her messenger bag, along with her cellular phone.
The medical center wasn’t too far from her house, but the trek there was tricky. For some reason, Jude felt like she needed to remain unseen. She felt bad about just leaving the people in her apartment, one dead, one near death, and the other unconscious, but what was she to do? It wasn’t like anyone was going to care at the moment, if the police officers running around insanely meant anything.
Once at the center, Jude reached for her card to slide over the reader. No response. She tried it again with the same outcome. Then she sighed. “No power, idiot,” she grumbled. Then she turned and jammed her shoulder against the glass doors. They opened easily. Jude stumbled into the building then looked around. Everything looked somewhat untouched at first glance, which was all Jude spared the lobby.
“Hello?” she called out as she stepped through the large room. Her voice echoed off the walls multiple times before fading.
Jude went through some slightly ajar double doors into a lab, hit the buttons for the generators, then froze as lights illuminated the room. There was someone else there, someone that a dumber person would have assumed was a doctor at first glance, due to the white linen the person wore. Jude knew better, though, being the incredibly observant person she was. Even in the dim lighting the generators offered, Jude could see the fox-like ears and facial features, and the two tails that were twitching occasionally.
Jude would have been scared. She knew she at least should have been a little frightened, more than just startled. However, the fact that he had half of a key lime visible, protruding from his mouth gave Jude reason to pause and consider.
“Can I help you?” she asked, keeping her eyes on him, awaiting a response.
