Prologue
We were students
All of us were
We entered school
Knowing nothing
Hoping for something
Dreamers all of us
We slowly grew
We grew to….
Love, trust and care
For others
We were nothing special
Yet we carried the weight
Of our parents’ dreams
Hopes for a better future
We also grew as people
We became friends
The bounds between
Us grew and never faded
Yet here we stand
Now knowing something
Something more than
We did as we entered
There's a girl
I want to talk about
She was a kind soul
I will miss her so
This is her story
This is our story
Chapter One
Emily Parker -
My name is Emily Parker, I’m fourteen years old. Let me tell you all a story, the story of how I died. I closed my eyes and just laid there. I woke up a few minutes later. I was home as usual my mom woke me up with, “Emily, your going to be late for school if you don’t hurry up.”
School, why did I even bother with it? I didn’t like school that much. I wanted to stay in bed and sleep. But she wouldn’t let me do that. I guess in a way, I should thank her for waking me. I got up, got dressed and started down the hall, down the stairs and straight to the kitchen. I walked out the door and headed toward the school.
I closed my eyes and headed off to meet up with Mr. Finn, my English teacher. I wasn’t sure what was going to happen as I headed off to his classroom. I looked at the thing sitting across from Mr. Finn. I frowned not sure what to say. I couldn’t believe she was here. Anna Tyler was her name and she wore all black from head to toe. I looked down at the note and hoped this wasn’t why he asked me over.
“Hello Emily, this is….”
“Anna, I know who she is.” I interrupted him.
“Well then you know that I would like you to help her with her English project since you two were absent that day.”
“Wow, that does sound fun,” whispered Anna as she chewed her gum. I frowned not sure what to say. I hated to say it, but I didn’t want her as my partner.
I closed my eyes and just stood there for a moment before I asked, "What do you want us to do exactly?"
"Well, I'd like you two to get to know each other better as peers."
Peers, we aren't peers, she wasn’t even human. I opened my eyes and just looked at Anna. I didn't really want this to happen, but it did and I couldn't control it.
“Now if you don’t mind, I have to go somewhere. See you two later.”
Yeah, if she doesn’t kill me first, I thought to myself as I looked at her.
“I won’t bite, if that’s your problem.”
“No, that’s not it,” I whispered. It’s you, that’s my problem.
“Then what is it?”
“I don’t feel like talking about it.”
“Why?”
“Cause I really don’t want to, that’s why.”
“I see, anyway,” she closed me in the eyes and just sat there with her headphones in her ears. This was gonna be one of those days. I headed toward the door and just walked out. I wasn’t gonna do this. I just didn’t want to do it. I had to face facts, she was no good, just pure trouble and that was it. I waited a moment before I walked out.
I really didn't need this.
"Wait up," said Anna as she walked toward me from behind. I turned and frowned as I looked up at her.
"What do you want?" I said harsher then I intended.
"Wow, chill, I was just going to say here's your book, you forgot it in your rush toward the door."
"Oh sorry," I said as she handed me the book.
"It's OK, were cool."
"Yeah, I guess."
Susan James -
It was my final year in High school. I didn't do much of anything this year. I figured it would be best not to. I spent most of my time studying, so a little free time wouldn't kill me. I looked at my watch and decided to get a snack at the "Snack Shack", a small booth next to the cafeteria. The difference between the Cafe and the Snack Shack is that the Snack Shack supplied me with my daily requirement of sugar while the cafe kinda made me throw up. I went up to the Snack Shack and ordered the usual can of soda and a chocolate bar.
"Hey Susan," said a familiar voice. I smiled as Emily entered my field of view. "Hey Susan, what's new?"
"Not much and you?"
"Same here, but anyway I heard there's a concert at Chelsea's theater, you want to come with me?"
"Who's playing?"
"Your favorite band, Death Cab for Cutie is playing."
"Oh man, that's gonna be great."
We talked for a bit. It was great having her as a friend.
"So how did the meeting go with...." My expression changed as I noticed something off about Emily's expression. "I'm guessing not to well."
"Gee ya think? I have to be paired up with Ms. All Black for god knows how long."
"It couldn't be that bad," I said we continued to walk down the hall.
"No, it's worse, we are supposed to share with each other."
"OK, still....."
She looked at me with a frown and from that moment on I knew I shouldn't say anything or push the subject any further. But curiosity over took me and I then added, "I can accompany you to these meeting, if you want?"
"Gee thanks," she said before we departed for class. I somehow didn't think the week would get any worse, but somehow I was way wrong.
