On a blisteringly cold winter morning, a light covering of snow had blanketed the country side, including an old abandoned cabin. Not many people traveled to the cabin because of the myth that hung around the cabin like a bad smell. The myth says that there once lived a young boy at the cabin with his pet bird he called Flamel. The day before the boys' ninth birthday, the cabin mysteriously caught on fire; well the towns that lived near the boys' cabin saw the smoke and rushed to the little cabin to see what had happened and what could be done. Nevertheless, on their way to the cabin, they heard a noise above them, when they looked up they saw the young boys' bird on fire, leading the towns' people to the house. What was the most strange about the whole matter was when they reached the house it was just a bunch of burnt rubble scattered all over the place, lying in the midst of the house was a baby boy and what looked like a newly hatched bird, the newborns looked exactly like the boy and bird that they had come to save from the fire. A slight breeze had been blowing and in an instant, the wind became a high wind gale whipping around the house, left and right the timbers that had been left standing were blown to the ground... Crack.
A large timber broke from the house and fell to the middle of the house, when the smoke cleared all the townspeople could see were the feet of the baby boy and the wing of the newborn chick. Months later, the townspeople rebuilt the cabin in loving memory of the young boy and his pet bird. however, more mysterious was the fact that exactly one month after the cabin had been rebuilt, all of the townspeople that had witnessed the boy and bird perish under the broken timber, perished themselves from a wide variety of deadly accidents and diseases, leaving no survivors. The daughter of one of the dead townsfolk had moved into the cabin, thinking that if she moved away that she wouldn't catch the diseases that were going around the towns.
On that cold day, another young boy had been born in the cabin and because not many people visited or traveled by the cabin, hardly anybody knew about the boy that was living there. Unknown to the mother, she had named the boy Nicolas Sukari... The boy that lived there and died was named Nicolas Sukari. So when little Nicolas went missing the distraught mother went to the towns, asking if anyone had seen her little boy. No one knew anything about the boy so they couldn't help her. The mother went home in tears to find that her boy had come back home with a bird he meant to keep as a pet, the boy named the bird Flamel.
When the towns heard about the boy and his pet bird named Flamel, they went into an uproar against the mother and son, saying that the boy had been reincarnated, that the mother was a witch and they would bring bad luck to the towns if they were allowed to stay. The boys' mother tried to plead with the angry towns but the towns had made up their minds; so to keep her son alive she sent him to live with one of her best friends that lived far away. She promised her son that she would come to visit him before his next birthday and to behave when he got to his new home.
By the time the boy had finally settled into his new home, it was the day before his tenth birthday.

"Nicolas! Breakfast time birthday boy!"
Nicolas groaned and rolled out of bed. Nicolas remembered that he wasn't with his real mother but to be considerate he always called his mothers friend mother.
"Mother! Where are my shoes?" Nicolas yelled down the stairs.
Mother yelled back to look in the hall closet.
As Nicolas passed his baby brothers room, a loud wail erupted from the room signaling to the family that Hal was awake.
Nicolas got his shoes, took care of his baby brother then set off down the stairs for breakfast.
"I made your favorite, eggs and bacon with syrup."
"Thanks mother." Nicolas said, kissing mother on the cheek before sitting down too eat. Nicolas offered to wash the dishes but mother said no and told him to hurry to school.
For Nicolas, school was only a couple of blocks away. He slipped on his white school uniform jacket, picked up his school bag and set off for school.
"Good morning Nicolas. Aren't you a bit early today?"
"Yes, my mother wanted me out of the house early. It's my birthday today." Nicolas answered Mrs. Doorin.
"I knew we needed these treats today." Mrs. Doorin said, extracting chocolate chip cookies from her bag that sat beside her desk.
Nicolas was happy that Mrs. Doorin had remembered his birthday. He asked Mrs. Doorin if he could pass out the cookies when the time came. Of course, he was also thinking to himself that he would save his cookie for the girl that wasn't in his class but always sat by him at lunch.
"Nicolas, did you hear me?" Mrs. Doorin asked, snapping Nicolas out of his trance.
"What? I'm sorry Mrs. Doorin; i didn't hear what you said." Nicolas apologized.
"Nicolas, sit down and talk to me. Something is obviously on your mind, that's twice in one week you couldn't hear me. Frankly I'm getting a little worried." Mrs. Doorin said, sitting down behind her desk, pulling a chair up to her desk for Nicolas.
Therefore, Nicolas sat down and told his story to Mrs.Doorin, only because he trusted her not to say anything. He told her how nice this girl was to him, he wondered what grade she was in and the more important matter at hand, what her name was.
"That is so sweet! This sounds like cupids arrow." laughed Mrs.Doorin.
"Cupids arrow?"
"It's just a funny way to say that you've fallen in love." Mrs. Doorin explained.
Nicolas opened his mouth to say something else but the bell interrupted him. Mrs. Doorin told him to go to his seat.
"Hey Nicolas." spoke a young girl as she entered the class with three other people.
"Hi May, nice haircut Harry, hi Collin, what's up Jani." Nicolas gladly greeted his friends. The class seemed to fill up quickly today as he watched the door for his mother, he had a gut feeling that she would show up today with Hal and Flamel.
"Class, today is a special day. Can anyone guess why?"
May raised her hand.
"Yes May."
May stood up and in a quiet voice said it was Nicolas's tenth birthday today.
"Exactly, you all know what that means for today." Mrs.Doorin said.
"FREE DAY AND TREATS!"
"I've made chocolate chip cookies for everyone today. Nicolas, you can pass out the cookies now. In addition, we have Nicolas's family with us today, along with his pet bird..." The class cut off Mrs.Doorin as they shouted Flamels' name.
Flamel came through the classroom door and landed on the back of Nicolas's school chair, his mother and baby brother Hal calmly walked into the room with their own treats, cupcakes with a frosting picture of Flamel on them.
"Thanks mother, you're the best." Nicolas said, setting down the cookies to hug his mother.
"We'll stick around for a bit and then I'm going to take Hal home. When Mrs. Doorin says to send Flamel home you listen to her and send him home straight away."
"Yes mother, I will." Nicolas replied, a grin stretching from ear to ear.
Mrs. Doorin quickly got the class under control so they could hear the announcements, the only announcement was that it was Nicolas's birthday and the school wished him a happy birthday.
"Mother." Nicolas said as he wandered over to where she was sitting.
"What is it hon?"
"I want to talk to you about something later." Nicolas said, slightly blushing as he thought about what he wanted to say.
"I see." Mother said smiling.
"Thanks for understanding mother; I'll see you at home." Nicolas whispered in his mother's ear.
Nicolas escorted his mother to the classroom door, waved goodbye and proceeded to pass out the chocolate chip cookies. He looked up and saw that May was passing out the cupcakes; Harry was trying to get Flamel to eat a bit of cupcake... It wasn't working. Collin had wolfed down both treats and was eying his... Flamel was keeping a watchful eye on his treats thought, so he didn't have to worry.
Nicolas had an uneasy feeling in him; he couldn't place where he had had the feeling before.
Against school rules, Nicolas used Mind speak to alert Harry, May, Collin, Jani, and Flamel that something was wrong.
"And you say you can't place where you've had the feeling before... Does it actually feel like you were the one that had that feeling?" May thought back to Nicolas.
"Thanks Nicolas!"
Nicolas jumped as the class loudly thanked Nicolas for the cupcakes. He smiled and said it was nothing, but inside himself, he had figured out that he hadn't had that feeling before... It was coming from the link to Flamels' mind. Nicolas was thinking maybe Flamel had that feeling for a previous owner, and then tried to dismiss it because this was Flamels' tenth birthday too!
"You don't know about the myth, do you?" Flamel asked, tugging a part of Nicolas into Flamels' mind, leaving Nicolas' body to function on autopilot.
"What myth?" Nicolas asked.
Flamel chuckled, asking if he even remembered his first nine years of his life.
Nicolas could only remember the moment he found Flamel and what his mother said to him before she made him come to the place he now called home.
"I love you, I'll try to come see you, and I'll miss you dearly."
Nicolas' mothers' voice tinkled in his memory as the sentence was said repeatedly.
"Nicolas? What did you see?"
"Wha..."
Nicolas was on his back on the floor, everyone was staring at him. A rush of worried messages whizzed into his mind. apparently he had started to cry, cringing away from anyone who touched him, except Flamel. Screaming that he wanted to go back to her, rescue her from that bloodthirsty town, threatening... then had silently fallen to the floor.
"Thanks for the recollection guys. I'll tell you the truth later. I've got to come up with a story fast... Are you sure I didn't say any names."
"Just one, i think it was the name of the town," Jani thought "You screamed it right in my ear."
"Sorry Jani, what did i say?" Nicolas thought to Jani.
"M.Y.S.T. That's how you said it anyways. One letter after the other really broken, might have been the sobs that made it seam that way though."
"Nicolas!" Mrs.Doorin gasped. Nicolas had grabbed her arm that was around his shoulders, pushing it away from him. His voice seamed to have gone low and had a sharp edge to it.
"I'm fine, leave me alone."
Desperately, he called out to hi friends in his mind, he was losing control of his body.
"Someone let Flamel out please!" Mrs.Doorin shrilly asked.
A cold chill ran up Nicolas' spine, chilling memories flashed before his eyes but they looked like earlier times, nothing from the past. But the last image he saw before he blacked out gave him the worst chill of all, signaling to his mind and body that it was an image from the past. He was a baby sitting in the runes of a burnt house, a gust of wind came and the baby saw no more.
