Chapter 1: Hopeless Wish
Kia stepped out of her cold dark house and into the hot warm sunshine of modern day Tokyo. Today was her first day at Tokyo Private School. Her mother, oh her mother, her mother, with her stone cold eyes, flowing blond hair and mean dark facial features, was forcing her into it. Although Kia could not say that she enjoyed her days at the cold housing of Tokyo’s Depression Clinic. The stone building stood alone just within Tokyo, it was there to help the depressed. Kia’s eye’s narrowed in despise at the thought of the horrible place. People always with you, always telling you it would be ok when you knew otherwise. Kia remembered clearly why she was ever in that horrible, cold, stone place. Her dad died, and she refused to do anything people related because she didn’t want their pity. They would always come to her at the funeral saying
“I am so sorry, is there anything I can do to help?” And Kia could only stare at them, no emotion in her eyes, lifeless lips, and pale face. They would give her a flower, a white lily, or a yellow sunflower to show how truly sorry they were. Kia lost everything happy after that. She refused to speak at all, she hated leaving her room, she hated all other people, and most of all she hated her mother.
“Come on now Kia, you’ll like it there! You’ll meet all sorts of people who could be your friends...” “No.”
Kia shook herself out of her daze and started to walk the busy, yet very lonely road to Tokyo Private. She received her schedule from her the school office. It had been 3 years since she surrounded herself with people. She had special permission not to wear the school outfits, it was because of her “mental problem”
“Come on dear, just attend this clinic, it will teach you and help your state of mind” “And what if I don’t want to?”
While she was walking down the noisy, busy hallway to her classroom, she saw that she was receiving odd looks from everyone. Then came the whispering, the soft, hushed, I-don’t-want-her-to-hear-it whispering.
“I heard her dad died 3 years ago...” “Someone murdered him...”
“This is supposed to be his daughter.....”
“They say she was devastated after his suicide, and barely talked to anyone”
“Well I heard she went to some mental depression clinic for 3 years, this is her first taste of reality...”
“Come now Kia, just talk to the lady, so we can see what’s wrong with you!” “Why should I?! You’re just trying to get me out of your life mom!”
“Kia? Kia Samonyu? Hello? Are you ok?” Mrs. Pomert was looking at Kia. Kia had unknowingly walked to her classroom and spaced out. How humiliating..... Not that anyone cared. Kia looked around; staring at all of her new classmates, the one who caught her eye was daydreaming. She had long silky black hair reaching her shoulders, she obviously dreamed of another world. Apparently catching that she was staring at the girl Mrs. Pomert also noticed that she had spaced out.
“Higurashi! Come to reality!” She yelled. The girl turned around so fast she almost fell out of her seat. The class laughed at her and she flushed and mumbled her apologies. Kia stood there, waiting for Mrs. Pomert to tell her to sit in one of the clean, perfect desks for clean, perfect people. A strand of her Blonde hair fell in front of her eye; she pushed it back behind her ear, knowing it would soon fall back in front.
“Class, this is our new Student, Kia Samonyu.” The class clapped sarcastically and waited for Mrs. Pomert to ask if they had any questions for Kia.
“Do you have any questions for Kia?” Mrs. Pomert asked the class. Immediately half the class who had heard the hall whispering raised their hands.
“Yes John? What is your question for Kia?” Mrs. Pomert called out to a boy in the back of the room. He had red-brown short hair; a few strands of bangs fell into his face above his eyes. His green eyes looked nervously at his friends, whatever he was going to say, he had been dared into it by friends.
“Um... Kia? I wanted to know..... Is it true your dad committed suicide?” He asked, laughing as he said it. Kia thought is was no laughing matter; all 27 students immediately turned their eyes to see Kia’s reaction. Kia decided not to speak, but she had to hold her hand down so she would not try either putting the middle finger to him, or strangling him for asking.
Mrs. Pomert immediately started shaking, her gray haired bangs fell in front of her face from their places in her neatly put up in an old-lady style bun. She knew what she had been told to do, if anyone mentioned Kia’s father she was to call the school psychologist and they were to get Kia out of the room and as far away as possible. According to the clinics at the Depression Clinic, Kia was still emotionally unstable. Mrs. Pomert slowly walked to the phone, watching Kia’s cold grey eyes stare menacingly at John. John and the group of friends were to busy to notice the angry silent girl make her way slowly towards them.
“Come on Miss Kia, please talk to me, or your mother will be cross. Let’s talk about your father...”
Pulling her hard hand back and flinging it forward she punched John squarely in the nose. He fell to the ground, nose bleeding from being broken.
“Now come on Kia! Listen to your d**n psychologist so we can get out of here!” “Now Ms. Samonyu, there is no need for language when speaking to the girl...”
The group stopped laughing and stared at John’s bloody face. Kia didn’t smile, she didn’t follow her action up with a snide comment such as “now that’s not a laughing matter either” she didn’t even stare at him cold bloodily. She simply looked at him, all the hate, mistrust, pain and hurt were apparent.
Higurashi walked up to look at the damage. There was no fear, only a look that said she was severely sorry for what John had said and done. Kia stared back at her, a sense of understanding seemed to shoot between them.
“Come on Kia, you’ll make friends...” Mom, everyone will think I’m a freak; they’ll only point and laugh...”
“I’m Kagome. Want to come over to my home after school?” Everyone looked at Higurashi like she was mad. Kia considered staring at her the same way.
“Don’t come home until you make a friend!” “Fine, I guess you’ll never see me again!”
‘Looks like the witch is seeing me again...’ She thought as she nodded her head yes, still not speaking. Higurashi smiled,
“Great! I’ll talk to you after 12th period. What class do you have?” Kia walked wordlessly to her desk for her schedule to show Higurashi.
Kia picked up her schedule from the hard wooden desk. She handed the flimsy paper to Higurashi. She guessed she should refer to Higurashi as “Kagome”, her first name, but Higurashi would work until Kia knew her enough to call her Kagome.
“I need somewhere...” She murmured lowly to Higurashi.
“Huh?” Higurashi looked up from Kia’s schedule, where she was comparing it with her own. The strand of hair fell back into Kia’s face. Kia resisted the urge to push it back again, because it would only some back in front.
Kia looked up at Higurashi, and looked closely at her. Higurashi had long, black hair, about shoulder length while her own was to her ankles and laid straight down while Higurashi’s curled slightly as it reached her shoulders. Kia also noticed how her lonely gray eyes compared to Higurashi’s happy, vibrant, hazel ones in an odd way. Higurashi’s eyes seemed to shine unnaturally, yet there was something else in her eyes to. Something spiritual.....
Kia was unsure as to whether this was her imagination or not. Kia let it go because the school psychologist chose to come in at the moment. Ironically Mrs. Sowert and the “sweet and caring” counselor from the depression clinic were sisters; you could defiantly see it in Mrs. Sowert. Mrs. Sowert and her sister had the same baby blue eyes, short and cropped brown hair and big, fake, happy smile on their stupid faces whenever they faced Kia.
“Why Hello Kia! Remember me? We met a day before you started school here. You know my sister from...well....you know.....” Mrs. Sowert said cheerfully, losing her cheer a bit when she realized what she had said. Kia simply stared at her back, her lifeless eyes watching her every move.
If Mrs. Sowert was anything like her sister it would take about 7 weeks before she could be truly ignore the stare and talk to Kia comfortably. Higurashi stared at Kia and Mrs. Sowert. Kia calmly looked at Higurashi.
“I’ll see you after school.” She murmured in a small voice so only Higurashi could hear. As she went to take the schedule from Higurashi her hand hit Higurashi’s. Kia instantly sensed something weird.
Like an electric shock straight through her body, yet she kept a straight face, so no-one would notice. With that done, Kia walked out of the classroom, through the wooden door frame just as the bell ending first period came, and everyone rushed out of their boring classrooms to gossip about Kia some more. Instead of talking and continuing to ignore Kia, they all stopped and stared at her as she followed in Mrs. Sowert’s 3 inch high heeled, long stride wake. Then the whispering came again. Mostly because the student from her homeroom came out and immediately started telling their friends what happened. When they reached Mrs. Sowert’s office everyone was pretending Kia wasn’t there.
“Oh hello Mrs. Sowert and....” the secretary’s voice fell. “And....never mind....” she trailed off in her falsely sweet voice. Kia saw Mrs. Sowert glare daggers at the secretary, and still keep a smile on her face. Kia wondered if they remembered she was high school.....not preschool. She allowed herself to be lead into the office of Mrs. Sowert. It was a white room, pearl white to be exact. It was a decent size...
about the size of your average closet.
Kia thought this description fit the room so well because Mrs. Sowert called the closet room her home, Kia called Mrs. Sowert the Boogeyman. Mrs. Sowert actually called the closet room her office. But it really seemed like a closet.
There was a shelf behind the small desk stacked with food a supplies. The shelves took up the entire wall; the desk was very hard to get behind. Mrs. Sowert had to climb over her desk to sit in her chair. Kia could tell they gave her a closet to work in a called it an office.
This just proved her theory that nobody liked Mrs. Sowert. Across from the desk was a small wooden chair that reminded Kai of the chair from Ringu.
“Remember Kia, if anything goes wrong talk to your councilor. Don’t be Miss “Never talk” because I won’t stand for that. I might have for the past 3 years, but now I’m not. 3 years is plenty of time to get over a death” “What do you mean mom? Did you even feel sad when dad died? What is it with you? Over the years you have about 100 boyfriends, aren’t you even sad dad isn’t here anymore?” “This is not up for discussion Missy. Now go to school....”
“Hello? Kia, are you there?” Mrs. Sowert waved her hand in front of Kia’s face. Kia nodded after shaking herself out of her memories. They always came at inappropriate moments.
“Stop zoning out for Pete’s Sake Kia! If I catch you not paying attention to me one more time you’re in for it!” “But mom... there’s nothing I can do. They just come to remind me.” “What was that Missy?” “Nothing mother...”
“Kia!” Mrs. Sowert snapped. Kia came out of her memories with her eyes wide. She was only used to her mother’s voice yelling at her. Not anyone else’s.
“Is something wrong Kia?” Mrs. Sowert asked Kia with false concern mixed with equally false sweetness.
“No.” Kia said in her small voice.
“Hmm...” Mrs. Sowert put up on of those “I don’t believe your faces” while Kia put up her “I don’t care if you don’t believe me because it’s what I told you now deal with it” face.
Mrs. Sowert started talking about violence and things like that, and how Kia could have reacted differently to make friends with people and things like that. Kia spent the entire time either listening, or drowning in her memories.
“Kia, please leave you room. You haven’t left it for days. I don’t think you’ve had a decently good meal for a week. How are you surviving? If I discover you have chips and snacks in there you will be punished.” “I’m not hungry mom. I haven’t been for a week. I have everything I need here. My books, thoughts, a bed and the only thing I honestly do not need right now is you and you stone cold false concern faking love because you have the social worker standing beside you because he has finally answer my calls to him. He is probably staring at you with wide eyes because you are mouthing curse words at the door, hoping that I alone hear them” there was no answer. Only two pairs of footsteps walking downstairs to have a private conversation...
“Kia! What is wrong with you? I thought you said you were meeting Miss Kagome Higurashi at her locker. The school day is almost over.” Mrs. Sowert’s sharp yet sugar coated voice cut straight though Kia’s dream and brought her to reality.
“Oh yes good bye.” Kia muttered as she proceeded to half walk half run out of the room. How did they day go by so quickly? It confused her. She went to her 12th period class, remembering where it was, since Higurashi still had her schedule. When she reached it Higurashi was talking to three other girls.
“She’s so weird, why did you invite her over?” One girl asked. Higurashi frowned.
“How could you say that without knowing her? I think all she needs is a chance! Besides, I don’t really feel right talking about her behind her back...” Higurashi told her friend off. The girl scowled. Another one spoke,
“Well I heard her dad...” Higurashi interrupted her.
“LA LA LA LA LA! I am not listening to your gossip, whatever she has to tell, her stories or whatever, should come from her!” Higurashi said loudly while covering her ears with her hands.
Kia almost smiled. Higurashi was standing up for her, and Kia had barely even said a word directly to her. Kia waited for the 3 girls to leave in a huff before coming fourth.
“Oh! Hey Kia! Do you have your stuff? There’s no homework for you today, I asked the teachers already. So you are so lucky.” Higurashi said as Kia walked along side her to Higurashi’s locker. They turned about 3 corners and then went to the end of a hallway.
Higurashi’s locker was a baby blue color; it was about as wide as the length of a pencil. Kia wondered what and where her locker was\looked like. Probably a crap one near Mrs. Sowert’s closet… then probably wanted her there so they could keep an eye on her.
“So… we’re walking home, is that OK? It’s only a few minutes from here…” Higurashi began rambling on…and on… and on. Yet Kia somehow found herself listening… even when she tried not to. They reached a shrine… ‘this is her home?’ Kia wondered.
“This is my family’s shrine! I live with my mom, my grandpa and my brother…” Kagome went on about each family member. ‘I wonder why she’s so happy…’ Kia continued wondering.
“Mom! I’m home!” Higurashi called as she walked into the shrine. Kia followed her, figuring she would find out everyone if she went.
“Hello Kagome… who’s your friend?” A woman asked. She had short black hair and a nice kind smile on her face… her eyes where shining brightly…her voice was sweet and loving, how a mother’s voice should be. Kia compared Mrs. Higurashi to her mom…. Large difference.
“Hey sis!” a little boy’s voice came through.
“Hey Sota!” Higurashi called back to the voice. A boy came from the doorway. “Who’s your friend?” he asked… a curios look on his little boyish face and a gleam in his eyes.
“This is Kia. Kia, this is my mom, my brother Sota…. And my Grandpa must be off somewhere…” Higurashi trailed off. Kia nodded her head in acknowledgement. And mumbled a “hello”
Mrs. Higurashi seemed to be in the studying mode for “my daughter brought home a random person….. let’s see if she is the type of person she should hang out with” It was strange the way mothers worked….. Kia would never understand, since she has no plans to become a mother.
Kia wasn’t sure how…. But somehow they ended up in Higurashi’s room.
“Kia…. Are you feeling OK?” Higurashi was asking her.
“I’m fine….” Kia mumbled… more to herself than to Higurashi.
“You know… if you ever need someone to talk to…I’m here…” “Thanks dad…but… you don’t mind me confiding… do you?” “Of course not Kia… Why would I?” “…” “Oh……I don’t mind that Kia…… you’ll be over it soon. It will eventually be nothing but a small memory…”
“Kia….” Higurashi’s voice cut through her memories…. “Are you OK… why are you crying…?”
Kia snapped more back to reality at those words. She hadn’t even noticed she was crying. Quickly, she took the corner of the collar of her black shirt, and used it to wipe her eyes.
But before the corner even reached her eyes, a hand grabbed her wrist, and brought her hand down. Kia looked up, Higurashi was standing there…. Holding a box of tissues. Kia could have cried more.
“You’ll be OK Kia….. If you ever need someone to talk to… I’m here…” Higurashi said. Kia looked into Higurashi’s eyes…… it was a sight she would remember forever…. She felt as though, through Kagome eyes, she could see a whole other world. She could see trees, grass, happiness, and an ancient looking well.
“I need….somewhere….” Kia started…. Trusting fully in Higurashi, the trust was something she had not experienced for years… not since she confided in her dad that day… that morning…. That last day of his life… he took her secrets to the grave… just as he had promised. Higurashi looked at her closely.
“Where?” She asked. Kia looked up at Higurashi. She took in Higurashi’s green skirt, white and green sailor shirt. The nice black hair, hazel eyes and smile. The Kia looked at herself. Her grey eyes, floor length blonde hair, her black skirt that went to her ankles, her black shirt which was stained by her tears.
“Anywhere. I can’t stay here. I need to go…. Somewhere where no-one knows me, no one will judge me quickly… no one will talk about my past, or what to know to much about it….” Kia explained to her.
It was a hopeless wish, a hopeless wish…. Her wanted life was a hopeless wish. In this time period, this city, this country, this world, there is no place for her.
Everything she hopes for is a hopeless wish.
But Kagome had a glint in her eye, a glint that she could truly help Kia, and help Kia’s hopeless wish, become a wonderful life for the both of them
