In a dark forest, a lone orange bird burst into flame. Leaving a small pile of burnt ash behind for the wind to scatter. Before the wind has a chance to scatter the ashes a newborn chick poked its little head out of the pile.
“Caw”
A large gleaming black crow flew over a stripped valley, a forest fire had recently swept through the valley leaving the valley landscape bare of vegetation.
“Is your cousin going to go hunting with us this afternoon?”
A dark skinned man gazed up at the suns, their red and yellow colors melting in with the cream colored clouds. The light played off his stark white hair, anyone that looked would have seen a ghost trail of where his head was. Golden eyes gleamed as they slowly glared at the speaker.
“I thought I told you that my cousin was no longer welcome at this mansion. Phoenix has had a long history of abuse and negligence against family members, ‘accidentally’ shooting those that he no longer has any use for.”
“And what use would he have for me or you? Why would he benefit from either, or both, of us dead?”
“Anton, I told you before. I am to inherit the mansion from dad and if anything happens to me then you get the mansion. When all else fails Phoenix would get the estate, the hunting trophies, rifles, money and then the mansion if no living heirs come to claim the mansion.” His golden eyes swept the skies for any sign of grosebirds, and when the tell tale sign of movement came from a nearby bush he knelt and took quick aim at the brush.
‘Whoa! Don’t shoot!”
“Dam it Phoenix! I almost shot you, you came through the brush like those dam grosebirds. Be more careful next time.”
Phoenix slumped his head, his fire reddish hair slithered over his shoulders.
“I’m sorry but I said I would come hunting with you all and I’m going hunting with my family and friends, that’s all.” Phoenix sighed.
Anton shook his head in disbelief, shyly sneaking glances at his friend and older brother. His own white hair displayed twigs and leaves from his earlier run through the woods, now he had the energy to go hunting with his brother.
“So where are we going today? The edge of town, a new planet or are we feeling adventurous today.” Phoenix joked, trying to make the atmosphere a little more relaxed. He sensed that something was wrong with his friends but couldn’t put his finger on what it was.
Anton slowly knelt to the ground, raising his rifle with a quick motion and took a shot. Birds flew into the air, their brown and black feathers turning a dark shade of blue and red.
“Right here.”
-Bang, bang, bang-
“That wasn’t a bad day of hunting for being in the backyard.” Phoenix laughed.
“Phoenix, can you give us a bit of privacy please.”
“Sure Nicolai… I’ll be in the stables.”
Phoenix walked past the brothers and into the nearby horse stables. He made sure that he had no way to hear anything the brothers said by weaving a little bit of magic around his ears, causing only the brothers voices to be muted until he spun another thread of magic.
“How can we be sure that he cant hear us? What if he used magic to be able to hear us whispering?”
“Then we wont whisper.” Nicolai said, glancing at the stables and motioned for Anton to step into the woods where they would be protected by their fathers magic that was woven around the forests to ensure that no family member wouldn’t feel safe living at the mansion.
“We cant have Phoenix set even one foot in the mansion or else all the security mechanisms will go off and try to kill him, but he’ll just destroy them and then what’s to stop burglars from breaking into the mansion while we repair the machines? We just can’t do that!” Anton growled, not wanting to seem babyish around his older brother.
“Don’t worry about it, he knows that he is unwelcome in the mansion, and if he wants anything he asks one of the servants. No one treats the servants better than us two. Where else do servants sleep inside the mansion!”
“But didn’t he help put the alarms and the machines into the mansion? If he did then he’s gonna know what their weaknesses are so shouldn’t we try to keep him as good as we can?”
“No, he knows what our limits are around him and the house so I don’t think he’ll try anything."
