Prologue
Kaylee was sweating as the memory of her mother’s death filled her mind. She remembered watching her mother’s car get hit by a drunk driver as she was pulling onto their street. Her dad had walked with her to the park in the front of the neighborhood and right in front of their street corner. Once the paramedics arrived they informed them that her mother’s car had been unfortunately hit head on and would have to be transported by air lift for any chance of her surviving the crash. However, even that wasn’t quick enough to save her.
Chapter One: Help!
Kaylee is an eighteen year old girl that works a part time job at Lindsey’s Bar and attends Casper High School in Fortworth, Texas. Her father is a useless drunk and her mother died in a car crash when she was eight. She has an abusive boyfriend and doesn’t have a lot of friends. You’d think things couldn’t get any worse right? Well you’re wrong. One day when she was headed to school, her car broke down. She didn’t have any money, so she couldn’t pay for it to get repaired, she already tried to call Johnny but no one answered. She sighed. She would have to walk. As she gathered her books from the passenger side, she spotted the dark purple rings around her wrists. Bruises.
Then she realized what had happened last night. Johnny had gotten mad and flung her by her wrists into the kitchen table. That explains the back pairs as well. ‘Well maybe no one will notice’ she thought as she flung her purse over her shoulder and started walking. As she walked she continued to remember last night. “You stupid b*tch! You’re never going to amount to anything!” Johnny screamed, and then slapped her across the face. Her dad was passed out on the couch, after he slapped her for bringing him the wrong thing. She took it. She wasn’t afraid of her father, but Johnny was a different story entirely. She only took Johnny’s crap, because she knew he’d try to kill her if she fought back, and may succeed.
The only place she felt safe at was school. Despite what she deals with she’s an all A student. Just like her mother was, and she has dreams of attending Emory University in the fall. Johnny however didn’t want her to go which is how the fight got started. Unfortunately, it’s not how it ended she couldn’t get out of arm’s reach fast enough. As the pain grew unbearable, she cried herself to sleep for the third night in a row. All she could think was ‘what did I do to deserve this?’ as she desperately wished to have died alongside her dear mother. “I don’t care anymore, just make it stop” she whispered desperately to herself. She didn’t want to deal with this anymore.
It was her father’s fault anyway. He was the reason she was with Johnny. He had met him at auto zone about three months ago. They talked and became friends, and her father set them up. Johnny has many things wrong with him. He drinks, has anger issues, and has this huge issue with authority. Kaylee on the other hand is honest, sweet, and kind girl; she always knew how to hide her problems. Her mother had taught her how to act and how to react to things. Before her father had become a hopeless and
extremely useless drunk he taught her right and wrong. However, now she fights for her life as Johnny throws her around and beats her.
It’s no surprise that her favorite song is Face Down by: Red Jumpsuit Apparatus. All she could think is that she deserves better. As she comes into the building and heads straight to class someone bumped into her sending her up against the lockers, wincing as she continued to class hoping she that she would beat the teacher in so she wouldn’t get a detention. Lucky for her the teacher wasn’t there yet, as she took a seat and tried to calm her erratic breathing. That’s when she makes the mistake of putting her hand on the desk and her best friend named Michael Thompson came over to her.
“What happened to your wrists?” He asked in a hushed whisper. Kay- lee immediately let her hands fall back in to her lap.
“I fell” she whispered helplessly.
“I don’t believe that, what’s the truth Kaylee?” Michael insisted,
“Johnny did it. We got into a fight last night.” She murmured reluctantly.
“Johnny’s the kid your dad set you up with right?”
She only nodded,
“Don’t you guys always fight?” She nodded nervously, as she searched for any sight of Johnny. "
Kaylee, look at me for a second.” She held his gaze steadily.
“This guy’s tried to kill you hasn’t he?” Kaylee sighed.
“Yes”, Michael looked pissed.
“How’d you get to school today?” he asked unhappily.
“Walked my car broke down, Johnny wouldn’t answer, and my dad’s useless.” Michael nodded.
“You’re coming home with me today. My parents aren’t home and you need to stay away from this guy.” Kaylee sighed.
“I can’t. I’ve got work. Besides he’ll only get worse if I try to get away from him.” Michael nodded.
“Where do you work?” Kaylee sighed exhaustedly.
“Lindsey’s Bar. Mike, I appreciate the offer, but I could never drag anyone else into this mess. Johnny isn’t like most guys. He’s not easy to stop”- Michael interrupted her then.
“Please Kaywee? Just one night, I won’t mess with you; I just want to make sure you’re safe.” He hasn’t called me Kaywee since we were kids.
“Does it mean that much to you Mikey?” She asked remembering his old nickname from their child hood. “Yes, it does.” He replied honestly.
“Fine Michael but only for tonight.” She said gently enjoying the thought of escaping Johnny’s wrath for at least 8 hours. Michael smiled at me.
“Yes!” Was all they could say before the teacher walked in...
