My heart races, threatening to burst from my chest; My eyes dart left and right, always watching. I grip the bringer of death in my hand, Wishing there was another way.
Men around me fall, their lives spent. They will be the ones honored beyond all others For perishing during the fight of the century, Their country's flag stitched to their uniforms.
My body shivers at the coppery odor of blood. My stomach flips inside, wishing the smell would vanish. Oh, how my heart aches for this war to end, For peace to reign over the corrupted world.
I hear a battle cry in the distance, And my heart skips a beat. It is time, time to fight, Time to serve my country as best I can.
I close my eyes for one last moment of truth, One last moment of peace in my heart Before I commit the worst sin In the eyes of the Lord.
Oh God, I pray, please watch over me, Watch over me as I fight for my country, And for the men who are beside me. Please, that's all I ask. Amen.
Taking one last sweet breath, I charge into battle, Not knowing what will become of me and my men, Not knowing anything but the pounding of my heart. God help us all.
