Red, White, & Blue

Red for the blood
That spills in the streets
Blood for our brothers,
Mothers, sisters, fathers
Blood for the people
They were forced to kill

White for blanched faces
Of parents told their
Angelic, little, perfect child
Is dead

Blue for the tears
That wash away grime
From those who took a life
And the tears that
Cascade like waterfalls
From eyes of those who
Are bereft of their families

Red for the screams
That turn a throat raw
White for the prayers
That people stopped sobbing
Blue for the tears
That God sheds in Heaven

Red for the hatred
The knot that ties a stomach
White for the fear
Twinkling in all eyes
Blue for the streams
Nonexistent in these deserts of pain

Red for the slow-spreading smile
That mars Death’s flawless face
White for the bony hand outstretched
As Death carries the souls away
Blue for the lips as air becomes scarce
As souls relinquish their lives for the unknown

There is no bravery in red
There is no purity in white
There is no liberty in blue
