"History is much like an endless waltz. The three beats of war, peace and revolution continue on forever."--Mobile Suit Gundam Wing Endless Waltz. Yet we never learn from our mistakes. We begin in peace and then comes innovation and invention then jealousy which begats war. Or peace leads to new innovations and inventions in weaponary which generals can't help but use in combat.
Black Sabbath once sang "General gathered in their masses / Just like witches at black masses..." in "War Pigs (Luke's Wall)," they then went on to claim "Politcians hide themselves away / They only started the war / Why should they go out to fight? / They leave that role to the poor." Truly the "waltz" wouldn't be a bad thing if the ones that start the wars were actually fighting. Does George W. Bush put on the soldier's uniform, head to Iraq, and fight the "insurgents" along side the troops he leads like the generals of old? Did Hitler himself take over France or did he hide away in Berlin and when he was loosing, did he except fate or did he go out to a bunker and comment suicide?
And the people...It can be summed up by what Pastor Martin Niemoller "When Hitler came for the Jews... I was not a Jew, therefore, I was not concerned. And when Hitler attacked the Catholics, I was not a Catholic, and therefore, I was not concerned. And when Hitler attacked the unions and the industrialists, I was not a member of the unions and I was not concerned. Then, Hitler attacked me and the Protestant church — and there was nobody left to be concerned." When people are needed to fight a war people are eager to send someone else, but when the government comes for them they protest, but no voices are left to help them because they were all sent to war. Who will fight a useless war? The ones with no money to fight a useful one, of course. And who will fight a good war? No one for all war is evil.
I admit, some war is necessary, but never ood. When our home nation (whether it be America, Japan, Italy, Iraq, Malaysia, Mexico, England, etc.) is under attack by outside forces we must rise up to battle them, but when our nation is at peace we should not get into conflicts. If we all were against pre-emptive strike would war begin? If no one attacked then no one would retaliate and no one would die.
People look at the large nations and wonder if it's really so good there, the answer is no. For the large nations are constantly trying to claim the title of most powerful and can never have a true ally, only allies of conveince.
"I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones." --Albert Einstein.
