This isn't quite done yet- but I just wanted to get some opinions on how it sounds considering that I have to give a speech with it on tuesday.
TRIO was first introduced to my life about four years ago, in my freshman year of high school. I wasn’t exactly your average student- basically I preferred to stick to myself most of the time and I used to move around a lot so it made it hard for me to keep making new friends.
I was a timid and uninspired student who was happy to maintain a 3.5 GPA and to write. In the fall of that year several Upward Bound recruiters came to my school for the first time and spoke of the Upward Bound Program and what it could do for us, the students. It sounded exciting, fun, and like the challenge that I so desired in my life, so I applied.
It was quite the surprise to find that I had been called in for an interview to get into the program. At the time I was asked to describe myself and why I should get into the program. Quite simply I answered, “I don’t really like to talk about myself…” After a few minutes I was able to tell of my hobbies- my desire to write and go to college, to excel in my life by going to college and getting a higher education.
My first summer was spent in uncertainty- I’d never stayed in a college dormitory before, nor attended classes across the expanse of a college campus. It was difficult at first- learning to manage my time and memorizing the campus layout. Needless to say, I got lost quite a few times along the way, but finally I was able to easily find my way around. The summers before my junior and senior years were much easier on me, which made me glad.
Through TRIO, and into the Upward Bound Program, I have been introduced to many students from other schools, and I’ve grown from a timid freshman to a confident senior. I can say today, that because of TRIO I have been able to develop my future career decisions and strengthen my resolve to decisions that I’d already made. I can also honestly say that it’s helped me gain more confidence in myself and what I do.
