I sighed. Hearing commoners’ complaints were rather boring, especially if you heard them all day, everyday to even get specific.
I lazily glanced at the commoner before me. Heh, he was just a mere farmer, no one of great importance.
Tired of hearing his petty complaints and whines, I said in a monotonous voice, “Fine, your request is granted.”
He looked ecstatic upon hearing the news. With a bow, he scurried off, grinning from ear to ear.
“Pft, pathetic…” I mumbled. But inside, I graciously thanked Ra that the petty farmer was the last of the complaints I had to hear.
A voice behind me chuckled. “Don’t think so high and mighty of yourself, Seth.”
I cringed upon only hearing my name. No infamous title before it, just plain Seth.
“Well, Atemu,” I inwardly smirked. He doesn’t call me by my title; I don’t do so for him then. “At least I’m not the one slinking around with mere common street dancers.”
Silence. I knew I hit a soft spot. No one knew about Atemu’s affairs, sneaking around and bedding with dancers, and well, just any plain girl he could find. All just to feed his lust.
Unfortunately, I came across him seducing a blue eyed brunette. I followed them around for a bit. Near midnight, the brunette bedded with Atemu.
Like before, there was still silence. I turned around half expecting him to be gone. To my surprise he was still there.
My sapphire eyes glared at him. He just smirked. “Now, now, Seth. You don’t want me to strip you of your titles now, do you?”
“Well, I for one know you like to strip women of their clothes…” I thought.
“You wouldn’t dare…” I growled, glaring at him so intensely I could have burned holes into him. Unfortunately, Ra didn’t bless me with the power to burn holes into annoying obnoxious pharaohs named Atemu. Like the saying goes, we can’t have everything.
His smirk just widened even more. “Just watch.”
“Who would replace me then?”
“You’ll see,” with those words said, he left.
---
I took quick strides towards my chambers in the pharaoh’s palace. The Egyptian sun was beginning to set.
Servants scurried across the halls, in preparation for dinner. Three more hallways until I reach my chambers- somewhere I can think clearly…
CRASH! My body collided into another’s. “Watch where you’re going, simpleton.” I snarled. As I stood up, I dusted off my clothes.
Expecting to hear a “Yes m’lord!” or something similar to it, I was about to walk away. But I heard nothing. Since I never received my expected answer, I looked down upon whomever crashed into me- a girl.
I glared down upon the girl. She seemed scared as I intensified my glare. HA! Commoners make me laugh.
Her head was bowed. She was still sitting. “I’m sorry…” She uttered. If I didn’t know she was there, I probably wouldn’t have heard her. But I did.
“You better be!” I spat, proceeding to walk, once more, to my chambers.
“WAIT!” her voice called out to me. Footfalls echoed throughout the hallway. It reminded me of ringing bells. Since I was a good ten meters away, she was probably jogging to catch up with me.
I stopped. She did too. She was right next to me, panting.
I didn’t notice how badly she stood out until now. Her hair was golden, like the sun. Beads of sweat rolled down her face. Her skin was light and fair. Big sapphire eyes stared up at me. Hm…now that I think of it, she had a rather small frame too.
She shivered as I took in her features. She opened her mouth to speak, but closed it when I spoke. “What may I help you with?”
She grabbed the hem of her tattered dress and nervously wrung it. She stuttered, “Um…I’m Ki- Kisa-Kisara.”
I rolled my eyes in annoyance. “I don’t need to know your name. Just tell me what the hell you want.”
“I… I was wondering where the pharaoh would be located right now. Ca-Can you ple-please tell me?”
I raised a questioning eyebrow. Sighing, I venomously asked, “Are you another one of his whores? Another one night stand to soothe his lust for tonight?”
She opened her mouth to make up some sorry excuse, but I just went on.
“Don’t give me your d**n excuses! I know.” I pushed her, making her fall. “You disgust me!”
---
I slightly glanced back. Tears fell from her crystalline eyes. Pft, stupid wench…
Finally, I had reached my chambers. I plopped onto my bed, the soft silks rubbing against me felt relaxing. I took off my robes and threw them onto the floor. I knew the maids would pick it up later on.
“That B*st*rd Atemu, wouldn’t replace me, would he?” I mused to myself. I ran my hand through my dark hair. Mentally, I listed reasons of why he couldn’t.
1. He wouldn’t be able to find a good enough high priest.
2. No one can do the job as good as me.
3. It’s me we’re talking about!
4. No one could be trusted as well.
5. I’ve known him longer.
6. He needs me and he knows it.
7. If he even found someone with potential, it’d take years to train them.
“Well, someone thinks rather highly of himself…” a voice said from behind me.
I turned around to be greeted by a silver haired man with a cross-shaped scar upon his cheek. His tan skin contrasted with him pale hair. Murderous red eyes stared back into my sapphire orbs. A smirk found its way onto his face. I already knew who it was- the “King of Thieves”, Bakura.
“Hm…well give me some proof of why you believe that.” I simply replied.
He walked over to me, sitting in an empty chair. His smirk grew wider, oh how I desperately wanted to wipe that d**n smirk off his face.
“I just so happened to be in the neighborhood when I heard you listing off reasons for something.”
“Oh? So you’re trying to tell me that you just so happened to be innocently strolling around the palace, not causing mayhem and destruction in your wake?” I said dryly.
In the same dry tone, Bakura replied, “Oh yes. And you know what else I was doing? I was playing in the Nile, while making flower wreathes and randomly giving it to good little mortal children. Then I made my merry way here and decided to help some slaves escape.”
We both chuckled at the thought of this.
“But back to the point,” I said, now serious. “Quote something I listed.”
“No one can do the job as good as me.” He mimicked. I think they should replace “King of Thieves” with “King of Idiocy”.
“So?” I said, “It’s not like I’m lying.”
Bakura just rolled his eyes. “Right…”
“Anyways,” the thief said, “I heard the almighty pharaoh is going to replace you…”
At this, I snorted. “He doesn’t have the balls to do that.”
My statement seemed to make the King of Thieves’ mind think. “But did he even have balls to start with?”
We shrugged. “Good point.”
“I also heard that you were sleeping around…”
Bakura was greeted with a pillow in his face. “GET. OUT. NOW.” I ordered.
The silver haired Egyptian just smirked. As he left, he called over his shoulder, “Like I said, that’s what I heard…”
---
I woke up the next day feeling tired and weak. From the looks of the sun, it’s probably around 9 o’clock. But then again, I could be wrong… Nah, ME wrong? Pft…
Groggily, I stumbled towards my dresser and randomly put on some clothes. Normally, the slaves would do this but I was in a good but tired mood today.
Servants and slaves alike bowed down in recognition as I walked towards the dining hall.
Soon enough, I was there. Cheerfully ((0.0; Well as cheerfully as you can get with Seth)) I ate, unaware of what the day held for me.
Halfway through my meal, I felt a familiar presence behind me.
“What do you want now, Atemu?” I asked. I didn’t want to be bothered today, especially by someone as worthless as him.
“Seth, I’m letting you meet your replacement.” He replied coolly. His multi-colored hair was slightly in his face.
I slowly turned around to face him, mouth agape. What in the name of Ra! This wasn’t supposed to happen!
He smirked at my expression. Ooh, how I wanted to kill him right there, but no, there were too many people. Maybe later, in an alleyway or behind a bar…
But back to my current predicament, a replacement!
“Are you Ra-forsaken serious!” I half shouted, half screamed at him. My supposedly emotionless face was full of shock.
He put his index finger on his chin, in a thinking sort of fashion, as if he was contemplating something. Of what, I do not know. Just the thought of this B*st*rd actually thinking is hard to believe by itself.
After a few minutes of silence, he spoke, “Well, your replacement isn’t exactly your replacement. Said person is more of your partner. You’ll have to work together, as in teamwork.”
I cringed upon hearing the words ‘together’ and ‘teamwork’. I, High Priest Seth, do not, absolutely do not work together with people. Especially one who is merely going to take over my job.
Again, I found myself in shock. Like before, Atemu smirked. “Kisara, you can come in now.” He ordered.
As the sound of her name, a girl probably around my age (seventeen for all those who didn’t know) came in.
Her head was bowed down as she walked. A tattered dress hung limply around her body.
She looked up at me with startling blue eyes.
Her eyes… They looked so familiar. But from where…?
That’s when it hit me.
Golden hair…
Big sapphire blue eyes…
A fair complexion…
And a small frame…
This was the simpleton I bumped into yesterday. This was Kisara…
---
She came to me in eyes of blue
To steal away my rank.
And as I glared an icy glare
It seemed as if she shrank.
Indeed she was what I thought
A mere simpleton…
One who caught me off guard
And her name,
Her name is Kisara.
