I actually use to write my daydreams up as a little kid and had recently found the idea that I used for this story when I found out about the contest. I wrote up what I had written when I was younger and it turned out to be about 400 words. Obviously I've written quite a bit more, but I like what I have. This is just a one shot, but I'm considering to continue it on. Well see how people like it. The rating is pg. Enjoy.
The year is 2013, the ninth day of September. I live in a very quiet, but eerie alien space city beneath the surface of a foreign planet. I am currently 25 years of age and have lived here in the alien city, Maar, for three years. Doctor Nill, the one who found me and 49 other Earthlings, and his people say that we were cryogenically frozen for 50 years to save our lives. We are the only survivors or so we are told from an attack on Earth.
I do not remember anything before the attack or what they tell us about it by the time they arrived. Doctor Nill asks almost everyday if we remember anything at all. Once, one of the older men, Joel, said he thought he remembered something. Doctor Nill had Joel tell him what it was and he was gone the next day. That is why I do not tell anyone of the things I dream about. Plus, for all I know they can really just be dreams.
Another thing, they do not let us go on the surface of their planet. Doctor Nill says it is uninhabitable and that we must stay down here with them, but not worry there is plenty of room. Their space city that we stay in is made out of some dark, shinny, gray material. There are not many windows or mirrors around Maar. I have been told that I haven’t even seen half of Maar and that the city is roughly the size of state Connecticut from where some of us used to live. I know it should have some meaning to me but it does not. That comment seemed to spark some interest in one old man though.
Even though they tell us that it is not safe above us on the surface, I wonder why I see their people come and go on the surface every night. If the surface is unfit to live on, then why do they have shafts leading to the ground above us? They might be able to survive on the ground above us, but why get air to breathe from an uninhabitable surface? It is like they do not want us to know something. I have tried to sneak to the surface before but there is always someone watching. We can not go anywhere without someone watching us. I think we aren’t supposed to know, but I see them. They always just happen to be there wherever you go, whoever they are. I call them “the watchers.” I have found an old shaft that they seem to have abandon. That is the one that I will have to use if I ever want to find out what really is on the surface.
Doctor Nill says we are safe if we stay in the city and in the building, Nill Laboratory. We are allowed outside to the artificial, as they call it, landscape that they have, but we rarely go. If you go, you do not go far, because Doctor Nill always finds a reason for us to stay inside. I always try to go out because I hate it here in the building. You never feel safe and the people here always look unhappy, even quit a few of the earthlings, as they call us, are starting to take up the gloomy looks.
About three times a week we go and visit Doctor Nill. The visits always involve some kind of shot and medicine. He runs test on each of us about once a week to make sure we are still healthy from being frozen. I have to go in every morning for a shot and he does “check ups,” what he calls the tests, on me twice a week. Kaleb and Tige are the only two that go in more than me. Kaleb has to get shots every eighteen hours while Tige gets pills every eighteen and a shot every six days. My check ups and theirs usually coincide. I think Kaleb might remember something too but he keeps quiet. I have hardly heard him say two words. He is the quietest out of all of us, even more so than me.
Since the dreams, I have been curious. I snuck into Doctor Nill’s “secret office” this morning. The information I found was disturbing. It has awakened in me all my old memories. I remember it all. The mission to Pluto that discovered something no one was expecting to find. I remember the mass confusion around the world when the alien life forms where first found. Doctor Nill did not save us from the aliens. In fact he was, no is the invading alien! I can remember their spacecrafts litters the earlier morning sky where I lived when they attacked. Not much is clear after that. I remember bright lights and a deafening noise to wake up to an assistances of Doctor Nill’s standing above me telling me that they had rescued me and others and that we were now safe on their space city. Also the city we are on is not in space, but is actually on Earth! That is not all though. The war is still going on. There are still humans that are resisting the aliens.
You can see why I find it disturbing. Then there’s the fact that Doctor Nill is really the leader of this city. He is keeping us for experiments and the Earth is still trying to fight these aliens that invaded three years ago. He is trying to make us into some kind of superhuman that are only loyal to him to fight for them. The worst of it all is they suspect that I know something. I have spent too long writing this. The longer I stay here the more danger I am in. I am taking my leave of this city. I have to find the rebel humans and take everything that I have learned about Doctor Nill and what he is doing and what his people are planning. I must go now, they are coming.
