Summary -- "For a moment, a passing car lights up the stone walls of a prison, the gates that close in the thousands of societal outcasts." Rated K+Just a drabble that came out after reading about "Tookie" Williams' death. Was thinking about capital punishment and all that jazz. *~*~*~*~*
The cars flash by, headlights shining bright through the darkness, then fading away into the darkness. Above is a hulking shadow, a black hole that blocks out the light of the stars. For a moment, a passing car lights up the stone walls of a prison, the gates that close in the thousands of societal outcasts. Inside, there is a light. It glows golden amid the predawn gloom, reflecting off of the white walls and floor. A man stands beneath it, cleaning the needles and table. Waiting. They bring him down from his cell, quiet and subdued. It only takes a moment – years of squabbling and anger, but it takes no time at all to end. They wait, take the time, write the certificates, leave. Outside, the press is clamoring for justice. Outside, the world is waking up. Outside, one mother is weeping, another celebrating. Outside, they drive away into the sunrise. The cars flash by, headlights fading in the dawn. Not one stops to wonder what waits on the other side of the walls. The prison brightens, shadows falling over the gate that glower over the threshold. Inside are trapped a thousand souls, outcast from us all.
