I'm a big fan of listening to music while I write, it really calms me and helps me focus. Well, most of it does. I find some tracks that end up distracting me (yes, M, that). I've made a list of bands and singers that you can usually find me listening to when I'm writing: - Anna Nalick
- Aqualung
- Astrud Gilberto
- Bela Fleck & the Flecktones
- Bryan Adams
- Calexico
- Chris Botti
- Damien Rice
- Hans Zimmer [particularly the Pirates of the Caribbean and King Arthur soundtracks]
- Il Divo
- Iron & Wine
- Isobel Campbell
- Jann Arden
- Jamie Cullum
- Josh Groban
- Joss Stone
- Katie Melua
- Keri Noble
- Lingalad [particularly the Voices from Middle Earth album]
- Minner Driver
- The Postal Service [particularly the Give Up album]
Does anybody have any suggestions? Or do you have a selection you enjoy most? Let me know

My suggestion to everyone is to form HUGE playlists, shuffle them, and the play them in some random order. Start with a song that you absolutely love and then begin writing whatever comes to mind. This is also a good idea for when you have outside distractions (such as parents ) and want to focus on something. My playlist (currently) is 10:48:47 and I want to get more music for it, I have a friend with the Queen CD I've been searching for and a really good Eminem mixed CD, I'm hoping she'll allow me to rip them. I think this is the reason that I need an external hard drive... -_-;

lol, that's my reason for wanting one, Anime. I download too much. It's unhealthy (And now I'm going to go download those Bowie songs) That's a good idea to make a giant playlist. Maybe even a playlist for each mood or type of scene you writing - for example, fast-paced edgy music for intense scenes and soft, perhaps instrumental music for thoughtful scenes. It seems like soundtracks are a good idea, too, since they are generally compiled to follow the ups and downs of a story. Does anybody have any good recommendations for soundtracks? Edit: I should mention that Antigone Rising is a great band to listen to when you write, but I only have a live cd and that tends to distract me for some reason lol

I tend to find that certain music works with certain writing genres. When I was writing Lotr I had alot of action in my stories so I listened to more upbeat stuff. I actually named that playlist Thump because it was mostly rap and heavy base songs from the 90's. When I was writing Phantom stories I was listening to music from the Lotr Soundtrack. Alot of insturmental airy stuff. For my Harry Potter story I listened to my Phantom of the Opera Soundtrack. Don't ask me why. It's just what fit the mood for me. When I write Family stories I listen to Robbie Williams. Now I am writing three fanfics that all feature movies that star Chrisian Slater. I have six songs on my playlist and I know Idril could name at least four maybe five of them. Four are from the Bed of Roses Soundtrack. One is from the Kuffs soundtrack and the other is from that Robin Hood video that I added to the Video section. I might add some more Bryan Adams to that list. His stuff is just awesome to write to. The one thing I have found is that when I want to write I never add a new song that I don't know well to my playlist. It will distract me evertime it comes on. I have to have familiar favorites that I can tune out part way and use as just background noise. Now sometimes I do change to other stuff depending on the mood. But here is a list of Most of my writing music. - Bryan Adams (Anything he sings)
- Meatloaf (Some of the tracks from his Back Into Hell cd)
- Jann Arden
- Leonard Cohen
- Robbie Williams
- LotR Soundtrack
- PotO Soundtrack
- Scarlet (Independent Love Song. I want to look into more of her stuff.)
- Sarah McLachlan (Ice Cream. I want to look into more of her stuff.)
- Darren Romeo (Singing Magician from Branson. Has an awesome voice)
- Marc Anthony
- Nickeback
- Goo Goo Dolls
- Rob Thomas
- Edwin McCain
- Seal
- A Knight's Tale Soundtrack
- Ace of Base
And for some louder stuff - Ac/Dc
- Queen
- A Tribe Called Quest (From my Thump Playlist)
- Salt N Pepper (Thump Playlist)
- Domino (Thump)
- Snow (Thump)
- Will Smith (Thump)
- Def Leppard
- Poison
- White Snake
- Warrant
- Kid Rock
- Bon Jovi

I knew all of those six, M, and they're on my playlist right now, too I also have the song Bryan Adams sings on the Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves soundtrack, Foreigner, and a few others. I only have a few Sarah McLachlan songs, but "World On Fire" is a really good one. My friend also told me she sings a song with Bryan Adams on the Spirit soundtrack, I'm going to go look for that one. I don't have any of the Lord of the Rings soundtracks, I should look into those, thank you for reminding me!

When I was compiling a fanmix for the movie King Arthur (2004) I ended up also making a playlist that (I think) reminds one of medieval times, and I figured I'd post it. It's basically compiled of powerful rock songs with strong vocals... - I Can't Do This - Plumb
- Going Under - Evanescence
- Soul - Rocco Deluca and the Burden
- There and Back Again - Daughtry
- What if We Could - Blue October
- Crash - 12 Stones
- R-Evolve - 30 Seconds to Mars
- Snow White Queen - Evanescence
- 3,200 Years Ago - Troy Soundtrack
- Cursed - Robbie Williams
- Hear Me - Kelly Clarkson
- Wild - Poe
- Crashed - Daughtry
- Tell Me Now (What You See) - Moya Brennan (from the King Arthur soundtrack) - this one's slow and dreary, more along the lines of the aftermath of a violent war, but it works well.)
- Let It Go - Blue October
- Walk with Me - Reveal (a local band)
- Sweet Sacrifice - Evanescence
- What I Want (featuring Slash) - Daughtry
- Whisper - Evanescence
- Gravity of Love - Enigma (thanks, dl, for getting me hooked on this one )
- I Won't - Keri Noble
- Holding out for a Hero (Bonnie Tyler cover) - Frou Frou
- How Long - Hinder (explicit)
- All the Time - Jeremy Camp
- Bring Me to Life - Evanescence
- Run - Kutless
- Dirty Little Secret - Pillar
- b*tch - Meredith Brooks (for the fiesty leading lady, apparently)
- Set It Off - P.O.D.
- Lacrymosa - Evanescence
- Fireproof - Pillar
- Song 3 - Robbie Williams
