Okay, so not just Civil War Reenactments, but other time periods, too! There are tons!
Recently, I've become involved with a Renaissance faire group, and they're positively wonderful. I really want to tell everyone about them, but...that would be a little pretentious. SO! I'm going to bring other people into the mix, so it isn't just me talking to...my computer screen!
Here, you can talk about any kind of historical reenactment that you've attended, from any time period. Tell us about your experience, why you decided to go to that event, if you went back, why you didn't go back if you didn't, etc etc etc. Anything (appropriate) about faires! Don't want to be limiting.
I'll start, seeing as this is now my thread that I'm sharing with you all.
So, my reenactment experience includes a handful of Civil War reenactments and about two or three Renaissance faires. The first one I remember was a RenFaire in California. I was about five, but despite that being about 12 years ago I still remember it! It was great. I remember running through the dusty streets, seeing people in costume, the petting zoo, someone buying me a beaded purse, and probably the most significant event of my young, single digited life:
I was "queened" by a knight. (Get your mind of the gutters, you horrible, horrible people.) Okay, so. Five year old me...a little shy. We're at the joust (my absolute favorite part of faire) and there's a black knight (duh, in black armor) and the...other guy. They're going at it with their lances and I notice some other girls have crowns. When I asked my dad, he told me some such thing or other, and then told me "If you go up to that window in the wall there, bat your eyelashes and smile pretty when the knight rides by, see what happens." So being the gullible little child I was, did just so. And can you all guess what happened?
The black knight in all his armored glory rides up to me with a wreath-crown of dyed baby's breath and ribbons on his lance and asks, "What is thy name?" I...flipped...out. So long story only slightly long, he gave me the wreath-crown, and the title "Queen of Love and Beauty." The ENTIRE crowd chanted it. "Hail Riona, Queen of Love and Beauty!" Not really Riona, but yeah. Then...the knight looks at my dad and says, "Way to schmooze, dad."
For years after that, I HATED that story. Now I just laugh at it.
So that's my biggest faire memory. Other times, I've visited Civil War Reenactments (I hate typing that word), bought stuff, watched the battles, made single-serving friends...same as at RenFaires.
But now, I'm going to be cast in one! It's great! I'll definitely be getting pictures, though it doesn't start until May. But my role is an apothecary, set in the Townsfolk Guild, as Middle Class. I still have to develop my character, but that's the fun of it! Rehearsals are starting and I"m so totally stoked.
So what about you guys, now that I've rambled at you?
