Okay I saw this for the first time a couple of days ago and honestly I loved it. It was very dark at times and progressively got darker as it went along. But it was so enticing the way they presented it.
But there is one thing that is bugging me about it. The machine. Or exactly how it works. When Angier first stepped into the machine a double appeared about 20 feet away and he picked up a gun and shot him. Then on stage the version of him that was on stage dropped through the trap door and drowned when the second version appeared in the balcony. What I can't figure out is which one was the original Angier? Here are three different theories I've come up with. Take a look and tell me what you think happened.
1. The original Angier is the one in the machine and the other is a copy. If you believe that one then that means that the first time he stepped into the machine he killed his double, but ever time after that he killed himself because the one on stage died. Which would actually mean that the first one that was killed was a double. The second one was the original and every one after that was a new double. But Angier would know that he was the one that was gonna die that first time on stage so why would he do that? Would he risk that to get even with Borden?
2. The original Angier was transported 20 feet away and the double was left behind in the machine. Which would mean that the original Angier was killed first and a double was killed everytime after that. But if the double knew he'd be the one that died the next night why would he go on to do it?
3. And maybe highly far fetched but. The original and the doubles shared a consciousness, so to them it did not matter which died as long as there was one left in the end. Any way they looked at it they could frame Borden and take his life away from him.
I know these thoughts really have no effect on the movie and how great it was, but I just can't get it out of my mind. I like to know what motivates characters to do what they do. And I am just having trouble trying to figure out exactly what Angier did by using the machine.
So which theory do you agree with or do you have your own? I'd love to hear.
