UK dvds won't play on our dvd players, Mage. Sorry. I don't think there's any way of getting hold of the full version on a US dvd. I'm going to look for the full version online, and if I find it, I'll let you know

I'm not entirely sure, Mage. Near as I can tell, DVDs must be formatted for specific regions and they need matching region DVD players. We in the US and Canda are Region 1 and in Europe (as well as Japan, South Africa, and the Middle East) are Region 2. There's several other remaining regions, five or six of them maybe, but I don't know what goes to where.

Well I for one thought they did a very poor adaptation of Mansfield Park tonight. They got practically everything wrong and Fanny was not cast right at ALL.

Well, you're right, Mage; as we were talking about, we really did need to see her return to Portsmith - if, at least, she had shown some inclination of realizing the difference in statuses when her brother had come to visit, it may have made more sense, but they didn't seem to regard that at all. I suppose just dropping it still works, for the story of the film, anyway. I always say, you can't look at a film adaptation as a retelling of a book, you have to look at it as a sort of alternate version or something. So I guess in this adaptation they decided to drop the entire status issue altogether. Though that issue was such a big part of Fanny, and of the book entirely, that it's hard to really drop it. Though one thing I was glad of, that they didn't have Fanny accept Crawford's proposal - in the '99 version she accepted, and I find that to be a horrible injustice to Fanny's character. I felt like her goodness showed itself in scenes like her not taking part in the play (after which, if I remember right, Sir Bertram realized she was of a smarter mind than both his daughters) and refusing Crawford, after which the affair with Maria took place and she was again justly acknowledged by Sir Bertram. But anyhow. I think, having only just started with the books, and being so easily toppled over by pretty dresses and large estates, I'll be apt to like any Jane adaptation Anyway. I watched the 1996 film version of Emma today, with Gwyneth Paltrow. I've not yet read the book, but I really enjoyed the storyline and characters. And I thought Toni Collette did a very good job as Harriet Smith. I would never have expected to see her in a costume drama quite like this, and I was surprisingly impressed.

Yes, I enjoyed that version of Emma as well. Although I dislike Emma as a charachter, it used to be my favorite of the books. It seems as if the only charachter of Jane's whom I do not hate is Elizabeth Bennet. I'm looking forward to that showing. Also, I look forward to Miss Austen regrets and comparing it to the Becoming Jane movie.
