Since January brings us the brand new Jane Austen Season to PBS's Masterpiece Theatre I thought it would be a very good time to discuss all the different Jane Austen adaptations that are out there.
For anyone who's seen the JA Season in the UK on ITV, as well, feel free to discuss.
I've started a list of the most popular films and miniseries'/tv movies. A more extensive list of adaptations as well as spin-offs, parodies and spoofs can, of course, be found at The Republic of Pemberley.
Pride & Prejudice
2005 - film starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen
1995 - miniseries starring Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth
1940 - film starring Greer Garson and Laurence Olivier
Sense & Sensibility
2008 - miniseries starring Hattie Morahan and Charity Wakefield
1995 - film starring Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet
1981 - miniseries starring Irene Richard and Tracey Childs
Emma
1996 - film starring Gwyneth Paltrow
1996 - miniseries starring Kate Beckinsale
Persuasion
2007 - miniseries starring Sally Hawkins and Rupert Penry-Jones
1995 - film starring Amanda Root and CiarĂ¡n Hinds
Northanger Abbey
2007 - miniseries/tv movie starring Felicity Jones and JJ Feild
1986 - miniseries starring Katharine Schlesinger and Peter Firth
Mansfield Park
2007 - miniseries/tv movie starring Billie Piper
1999 - film starring Frances O'Connor
I think my favorite adaptation, though I've only seen a few, was the 2007 version of Persuasion (also happening to be my favorite of the novels, so far). My only complaints were that Wentworth's letter was altered - it was perfect how it was, and I doubt any of us would care if it were exactly the same as it was in the book, and they were forced to change the origin of the letter because they switched Anne's conversation about constancy from Captain Harville in Bath to Captain Benwick in Lyme, and Wentworth was too entertained with Louisa to "listen no longer in silence" - and that this adaptation was just too short, I didn't want it to end!
I also love, of course, the 1995 and 2005 versions of Pride & Prejudice, the 1995 film of Sense & Sensibility, and I saw a bit of the 1940 Pride & Prejudice and liked that one as well.
